    Hi all,

Here is the verse from a few weeks ago i prommissed to put on the Thread. Its from 'The sixth patriarch's (Huineng) platform sutra' in the translation of Red Pine:

"Twenty-two: "Good friends, having made the Four Boundless Vows, let me now recite for you the Formless Repentances that destroy karmic barriers of the past, the present and the future."

    The Master said, "Good friends,

'May past, present and future thoughts
    may thought after thought
    not be corrupted by delusion
may bad deeds of the past be gone
may they be gone from my nature
    such is my repentance

'May past, present and future thoughts
    may thought after thought
    not be corrupted by ignorance
may deceitful thoughts of the past be gone
may they be gone from my nature
    such is my repentance

'May past, present and future thoughts
    may thought after thought
not be corrupted by ulcerous hate
may hateful thoughts of the past be gone
may they be gone from my nature
    such is my repentance.'

    Now recite this three times.
"Good friends, what does repentance mean? Repentance means to be aware of past mistakes and not to commit them for the rest of your life. Unless your mind is forever free of evil, reciting this before buddhas won't help. In this Dharma teaching of mine, repentance means to stop once and for all."

As promised, the gatha for Ejo

To a disciple named Ejo who wanted to go too fast on the learning of the Way, zen master TOSUI gave him this poem (a gatha, poem who condensed the essence of his teaching ) :
                        ______________

Ejo, let your wisdom and meditation shine unobstructed
And here and there, drop things
Give up, even give up the idea of giving up
What will you have left to let go ?
Drink the tea and chew the rice
                        And don't look elsewhere
Ejo, let your wisdom and meditation shine unobstructed
And the ten thousand things will finally find rest
                        _______________
For my part, I printed this poem, substituting the name Ejo for the mine, Mokushō. It have a deep meaning…

The Great Bell Chant (The End Of Suffering)

                            Read by Thich Nath Hanh,

May the sound of this bell
                            Penetrate deep into the cosmos
                            Even in the darkest spots
Living beings are able to hear it clearly
So that all suffering in them cease
                            Understanding come to their hearts
                            And they transcend the path
                            Of sorrow and death

The universal dharma door is already open
The sound of the rising tide is heard clearly
                            The miracle happens
A beautiful child appears in the heart
                            Of a Lotus flower
One single drop of this compassionate water
Is enough to bring back the refreshing spring
                            To our mountains and rivers

                            Listening to the bell
I feel the afflictions in me begin to dissolve
My mind calm, my body relax
A smile is born on my lips
Following the sound of the bell
                            My breath brings me back
To the safe Island of Mindfulness
In the garden of my heart
The flowers of Peace bloom beautifully
