    Re: The Sitting Hall

I think I jinxed myself. Oovoo didn't work for me again last night. (I don't think my internet connection or wireless router can handle it when my wife and I are both using it at the same time)

Of course, I don't know jack about computer stuff.

    Shujin,
I'll keep my eye on the scheduler for ya.

      Re: The Sitting Hall

I had my first troubles with ooVoo last night... corrected by switching browsers from Chrome to Firefox. I think sometimes the browsers themselves can get a little tempermental, loaded down with cookies and other windows and such. So maybe next time you have trouble, try a different browser? Or just forget it and sit.

          Re: The Sitting Hall

amen, guys -- when oovoo won't play right, i found last year that if i turned the webcam off, it became more stable -- then its just an avatar with your name, but thats cool too

and then theres the scheduler, which is just about always reliable -- if my pretty face is absent from oovoo, but i'm on the scheduler, i'm there sitting, so we can sit together

i've often thought that an improvement to the scheduler would be the ability to edit a sit, make it longer, shorter, different time -- also, the ability to add other names to a sit, so it would be clear, with group sits, who was sitting -- in some ways, this would almost eliminate the need for oovoo(though i do enjoy a quick peek to see who i'm sitting with, when i enter the hall)

This is a good idea, especially the part about seeing who's sitting in a group at any given time. I believe ooVoo creates a log of users as they enter/leave the Sitting Hall, but I don't know what effort it would take to translate that into a viewable list. Obviously that doesn't help in advance, however. If I knew something about software, I would probably be more of a help. In other news, my head cold won't go away. It's on week two.

well, no stable oovoo, and turning the webcam off made no difference -- so just fell back to the old stand-by, the scheduler

                Re: The Sitting Hall

Sometimes, even the old "standby" doesn't.
Every once in a while bookings disappear from the scheduler. Like today. All mine went missing with the exception of this Friday. I re-entered the others for the week.
This happened once before. Curiously, the bulk booking note still appears in the sitters' list.
Proof positive, to err is human but to really foul things up all you need is a computer!

                    Re: The Sitting Hall

it appears that my problems were local -- somehow, here at this camp where we all share one wifi source, whenever we have high winds, big problems staying on oovoo -- today, the wind went down, and i had no problem with oovoo -- as far as i know, radio waves/particles are not effected by wind, as sound waves are, since they are, essentially, light waves

                    well, back to sanding meditation

                      Re: The Sitting Hall

Wind in your attenae! We used to have problems with micro-wave systems traversing flat areas, especially in Saudi between Medina and Buraadha. The heat rising from the land tends to stratify the atmosphere so that the signals disperse. It also depends on the frequency of the channel; in south western Ontario we had a system that would bomb out when we had rain showers of a particular sized droplets. Go figure, the best laid plans ....

thanks for those observations, shokai -- it would appear then that forces other than electromagnetic have an impact on my wifi signal -- well, its been pretty constant during my sits in the hall, where i appear to be holding down the am part of the schedule, north american time -- however, i am once again off to the big hall, this time the pinacate mountains of northern mexico -- a somewhat desolate volcanic range(the moon astronauts trained for their walk there) where i will hopefully spend part of each day somewhat present, and in searching for archeological artifacts, it would seem unavoidable that i will be paying at least some attention to my surroundings -- back in the treeleaf hall on sunday

roky -- Happy moonwalking. I found some photos of the Pinacates, and they look pretty neat. I lived in the Mojave Desert for a few years, but its nowhere near as desolate.

y'all -- Sitting at 0100 is not the cat's pajamas. Only four more weeks of nights.... d'oh! I should be able to sit the zazenkai live this week. Looking forward to seeing some folks on Friday.

thanks, ron -- was a nice trip -- and fortunately, the "surroundings" were conducive to a somewhat quiter mind -- in particular, the sand dunes at the base of the volcanoes were a definite buzz -- found an ancient gyrotory grinding stone that was briefly uncovered by the wind, probably now covered again
