    Yes it is indeed, which is OK. It's what our physical bodies are built for. I intend to enjoy my French Dark Roast coffee black instead of sweet, Beatles Rubber Soul better than the White Album, and sniffling through Hogen's emotional words of thanks to his Sangha. That is Jakuden's relative truth.

      Hey J,

      There's THE Sangha. There's THE practice. Feelings (for better, or worse) have nothing to do with dharma.

      Hugging all.

      Can't pose.

          Here is Jundo's Sutra:

          No relative, no end to relative;
          No absolute,
          No cessation of absolute;
          No dangerously nihilistic, nor cause or end to dangerously nihilistic;
          No path, no wisdom and no gain.
          No gain – thus Boddhisattvas live this Prajna Paramita
          With no hindrance of mind –
          No hindrance therefore no fear.
          Far beyond all delusion, Nirvana is already here.
          All past, present and future Buddhas
          Live this Prajna Paramita
          And realize supreme and complete enlightenment.
          Therefore know that Prajna Paramita
          Is the sacred mantra, the luminous mantra,
          the supreme mantra, the incomparable mantra
          by which all suffering is clear.
          This is no other than Truth.
          Therefore set forth the Prajna Paramita mantra.
          Set forth this mantra and proclaim:

          Gate! Gate!
          Paragate!
          Parasamgate!
          Bodhi! Svaha!

          PS had to do a little zen humor; I love the koans that use this pattern. Is it A? No, it's A!
          Wrong. Believe your eyes and ears 100% then you have truth. Thus it's not A, it's A!

              Hello,

              Only occasion being pulled over, while driving college professors (at the speed limit) in a winter ice storm, the officer inquired, "Where's the fire?"

              Unmitigated reply, "In your eyes, trooper." After laughing he said,

              "Shut up, slow down and don't kill the passengers."

              Learned a lesson. And, very much, appreciate yours.

                      Thank you for a lovely talk.

                      I am going to disagree with him a bit on the topic of Dharma Transmission to lay folks in Soto. It is true that it was not so common, because most folks engaged in serious Zen Training were Ordained Folks (until modern times, anyway, when opportunities for Practice have become more available to lay folks), so there have not been many cases of Dharma Transmission to lay folks. But our most famous Sixth Ancestor, Hui-Neng, was a lay person when receiving Dharma Transmission.

                      It is not so common in Japan, because so connected to church bureaucracy and temple inheritance, but there have been cases. The history of Soto Zen in Medieval japan relates that Meihō (Keizan's disciple) may have initiated a lay disciple who then taught Zen to other laymen. Certainly, in modern Soto lines in the West, there have been several cases of Dharma Transmission to Lay persons.

                      Nishijima Roshi offered Dharma Transmission to Ordained or Lay, without making much of a distinction. In fact, in the case of Brad and me and a few others, he only properly Ordained us because he thought such wide thinking would not be understood in the West and we would not be properly understood as teachers if it was not made to fit the mold. He thought the whole thing poppycock. You can read more about that here ...

                        Ah I was hoping you would comment Jundo, thank you! I was thinking of the Sixth Ancestor. Ultimately, Shugen acknowledged this was becoming the way of the future in the talk. And I was curious about Gudo Wafu Nishijima's role, since obviously he gave dharma transmission to you and Brad. He was so forward thinking. It may be poppycock, But it does give one an idea whether one is learning from someone who really knows what they are talking about or not!

                                I happened to listen to an old Daido Loori audiobook that Kokuu put me onto tonight... it was about a Koan, but he spent a good chunk of it advocating lay practice and even predicting online Dokusan (not sure when it was recorded) Some of the things he said about bringing the Dharma to those unable to attend a Monastery could have come straight from Jundo.
