    Hogen's Dharma Transmission

    or

    I found the latest podcast from ZMM to be touching and interesting... some discussion of their history and mixed Soto and Rinzai lineage... and the circumstances of recent Dharma transmission from Shugen to Hogen, who was a monastic at one time, but is now a lay practitioner.

    At one point Shugen mentions a gesture made during the ceremony which obviously can't be seen because it's audio, he says the meaning is partly a kind of "I'm sorry." As in, all the responsibility carrying the Dharma entails, no-self on the deepest level.

    The title of the talk is Do Not Disregard a Single Being, because the universe cannot exist without every single being.

    Fascinating stuff!

              I listened to this last night and was deeply moved, was going to post the link this morning so thank you, Jakuden, for already sharing it. I have met Hogen on several occasions and am very pleased for him and for the MRO sangha; he is a wonderful teacher.

                Hello,

                Thank you for the link.

                Everyone knows "transmission" is make-belief, right?

                You are born Buddha. Just wake. Or not.

                  Hogen himself told me that while everything is "make-believe," (absolute) we can't live in the make-believe, we act in the reality of now (relative). But we use the awareness of one to guide our behavior in the other. The no sided coin has two sides.

                    Dharma transmission is like selling water by the river. There is no creation nor ending to dharma transmission. Dharma transmission occurs when this is realized.

                    My 2 cents.

                      It may be like selling water by the river, but it is selling to those who--for whatever reason--can't or won't drink on their own. Hogen's statement aroused joy in me, because it was the embodiment of everything Jundo teaches here: everything Jundo says is phrased as, "do this [relative]as long as you remember [absolute] or, remember [absolute] while you do [relative]. If we lived in a purely absolute world, what would it matter whether we murdered someone or showed them kindness? Thanks to Jundo I have come to understand that we don't have the goal of forsaking the relative world for the absolute (as I once thought), that's dangerously nihilistic. We do Zazen to become aware of how the two inextricably coexist, no matter how much our human minds want to discriminate between one and the other.

                        Hi Jakuden,

                        Here is Jundo's Sutra:

                        No relative, no end to relative;
                        No absolute,
                        No cessation of absolute;
                        No dangerously nihilistic, nor cause or end to dangerously nihilistic;
                        No path, no wisdom and no gain.
                        No gain – thus Boddhisattvas live this Prajna Paramita
                        With no hindrance of mind –
                        No hindrance therefore no fear.
                        Far beyond all delusion, Nirvana is already here.
                        All past, present and future Buddhas
                        Live this Prajna Paramita
                        And realize supreme and complete enlightenment.
                        Therefore know that Prajna Paramita
                        Is the sacred mantra, the luminous mantra,
                        the supreme mantra, the incomparable mantra
                        by which all suffering is clear.
                        This is no other than Truth.
                        Therefore set forth the Prajna Paramita mantra.
                        Set forth this mantra and proclaim:

                        Gate! Gate!
                        Paragate!
                        Parasamgate!
                        Bodhi! Svaha!

                        But I could be wrong.
