Re: Pre-Announcement: The Always Open Zazen Cafe

    Here's a relevant story I once read:

    excerpt:

E had since become a monk in the Korean-style Zen school founded by Zen Master Seung Sahn (ZMSS). He’d written me while I was still in India, and seemed enthusiastic for me to try Zen teaching and practice.

I couldn’t understand why E found Zen worth exploring. I told him that Zen seemed just like Siddha Yoga. The differences were superficial: a different language to chant in, a different posture to sit in, and a different statue on the altar. The actual practice of watching and quieting the mind, of returning to the witness that saw everything as One, was the real point; why care about any particular tradition? E said to me, “It doesn’t matter if you do Yoga meditation or Zen meditation or Christian meditation or any other kind. But it’s very important to look into WHY you meditate.” Hmmmm.

E’s words caught my interest a little, but it was more powerful when I saw him demonstrate them. I went to visit him in L.A. where he was staying at a Zen Center with ZMSS [Zen Master Seung Sahn]. E would soon go to Korea for an extended time, and I wanted to see him before he left. Coincidentally, Gurumayi was on tour at the L.A. Siddha Yoga ashram at the same time.

The first night I was there, E said to me, “I’ve got a great idea. Why don’t we get up early tomorrow, do Zen practice first, then go to the program at the Siddha Yoga ashram.” I didn’t see any point to it. All these practices were fundamentally the same, what difference did it make if we went to one or the other or both? But, whatever, I’d go along with him.

At the ashram, as we did the Siddha Yoga chants and practices, including going up to bow to the guru, I kept watching E, waiting for him to say or do something to try to convince me that Zen had something better than Siddha Yoga. But he didn’t show any difference. At the Zen center, he just followed the Zen forms; at the Siddha Yoga ashram, he just did the practices there like everyone else. The way he just did both practices, without offering any opinions about them… it made an impression on me. His attitude of just following each situation was a teaching that couldn’t have been expressed with just words.

good story, will -- see you in a few weeks, ron -- as i sit here eating pretzels, drinking what wine is left in the bottom of last-nights festivities, in hopes of sleeping well (i'm a nervous flyer, and tomorrow i fly back to the desert)

The zendo did not work for me last night around 10pm est. I've been using it a lot lately and this is the first time I've had any problems. I'll check it again tomorrow night.

Am actually considering buying a webcam in the next few months, but was curious how often people use these available resources here at Treeleaf.

Zendo working fine again. Hello Rob?

If you are the only one in the hall, it will kick you out after a few minutes. To prevent that from happening, you need to open two windows. (you get used to seeing yourself twice) Other than that, it's pretty easy to use. I'm not a computer guy so if you have any sort of technical questions, post them and someone will reply. (Thanks again Dirk for helping me) If you read this thread from the beginning you'll get a good understanding of how everything works.

Ahh that would explain why i got the boot yesterday. Looked like I came in on Rob's sitting, but I didn't have a picture up at the time ( the image i use here looks horrid blown up that large but will have to suffice for now).

                  Rob/Padre,

I may try and join you in the zen-hall this evening (Friday, 5/22/9). I can't make any promises (It's "movie night" with the kids) If you wanted to sit alone, just let me know.

                  Ron

(p.s. should I call you Rob or Padre?)

just a quick note, before i lose this weird internet connection, that it is great to see folks in the zen hall -- now that i'm back in our summer home, i did jump right in -- as padre/rob said, even if technical difficulties interfere, i still sign up when i sit, just to make some connection -- hopefully by next week i will have my computer technical issues resolved, and will go "live" with the webcam

Good to have you back Bob! See you in the zendo (if I can make myself get up that early )

                      Rob,
I hope my random timing in the hall isn't bothering you (I seem to be unable to get there exactly on time) You are usually already sitting by the time I show up, and still sitting when I leave)

In another 30 min. or so i'll be heading out to buy a webcam. Lookin to get a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. So should have a better pic up in a few hours. Not to mention I can actually take part in the Meeting Hall and Zen Hall.

If I can find a regular time to sit I may even *gasp* start booking some slots.

It won't be just you anymore ,Rob. Well you weren't alone anyways, but you're the one i usually end up sneaking in on.

Well, if I do a full 30min. i'll have to chair sit. Getting a bit more flexible and feel much more balanced. I try to sit burmese in 10 min segments. Which usually means floor sit for those 10 min. then get up and chair sit for another 10-20 min.

I have discovered that at 20 min.s trying to sit burmese I kind of would like to have my left leg and parts of my back removed.

Is there a 3rd party program of some kind that will allow me to get my full cam view for mebeam? Seems it doesn't want to give the full cam shot ( like if i was taking stills). Which makes it a bit harder to get good angles and such.

Re: Pre-Announcement: The Always Open Zazen Cafe

I tried it with Yahoo messenger ( horrid fps btw) and CamFrog yesterday. I didn't notice any difference from the normal view through the logitech software.
Butt i didn't do it experiment style either so if there was some loss it was not as noticeable as MeBeam. And that view is the same whether i create a video or snap a still.

MeBeam seems to just take part of that view and enlarges it to fit the box. Like a square cut out in the center.

                                Dave

P.S. As a quick edit, I just reinstalled ManyCam. And if I have it go through ManyCam as the default device then the image is normal as with the logitech software.
So folks may wanna try it that way and see if it betters their own streams.
