By eating meat from the store, in my opinion, you become a link in the chain of events that led to the animal's death. However, a plant has life too, so eating only vegetables is still taking life. There is no separation between animal and plant, all are the same oneness. Not to eat at all would cost you your own life.

    Quite the quandary, eh?

So, in my opinion, the best way to honor the life of the animal is to try (when possible and practical) to buy meat from a source you know treats the animal's well and is ethically sourced, be thankful to the animal for its sacrifice, do not be wasteful, and if your location allows it, try to compost any leftovers and return what you can to the earth that gave it. Unfortunately, life eats life to sustain life.

      Thanks JohnsonCM,
I`ve found some interesting article about plants as sentient beings

New studies are showing that plants are far more intelligent than previously thought. Could this be the start of new protections for them?

Fascinating article Hishiryo. Thanks for posting. It reminded me of this documentary recently presented on the Nature of Things

http://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/epi...ees-talk-about. Hopefully the video plays outside of Canada

This is a fascinating subject. I will link another talk here. It is a talk with Monica Gagliano who does behavior based experiments on plants.

Do you really need a brain to sense the world around you? To remember? Or even learn?

I enjoy the position of Charles Eisenstein that our default state is gratitude. That is a more positive way of stating that we consume resources to live. Further, we are presented with so many needs that we would never be able to meet through our individual efforts that we must rely on the graces of others (parents, teachers, the sun and the earth) to provide for us. Being capable of the consciousness of this fact, we are also karmic beings. I'm not positive as to whether other beings in this realm of existence are also karmic beings (traditionally, animals would have to be, as belonging to the "six realms"), so our responsibilities towards other creatures is much higher.

While there may not be a right answer as to whether one should eat any meat -- or use animal by-products like leather, silk or wool -- we can approach the sacrifice with gratitude and say a grace. Thank you all for your contributions to my mental sustenance this afternoon!

I've been a vegetarian and I've been an omnivore. These days I have this stuck to my fridge:

                      I eat lot´s of meat/fish/eggs/cheese.

It´s just natural to me. Don´t even think about the animals.

I am at Peace with my nutrition.

I am not a vegetarian either, but it is a major part of our practice to be mindful of and grateful for how we get it and where it comes from.

Being at peace with something is nice, but not necessarily our goal. It may not always feel peaceful to be awake to our lives. Whether we eat plants or animals, we can be deeply aware of where and how our food came to us.

                              Hey folks,

I feel it is important to remember that it is not about sides (i.e. meat eaters, vegetarians, or vegans) or which is better. If you eat meat, eat meat. If you eat veggies, eat veggies. What is most important is that we are grateful for what we have, do not waste it. Be grateful for where it has come from and try and reduce it's impact, both to the planet and ALL sentient beings that inhabit it.

Our practice is to teach us too move past a world of duality, a world of division/separation, a world of judgement (this is better then that). What works for one may not work for someone else and that is ok. Do our best, be kind to one another, and be grateful for what we have. =)
