            Actually, it is typically said to be Buddha about to enter Nehan (Pari-nirvana), his deathless death at the end of life in this visible world. Here is some information (although this Tibetan page adds some information on significance that I personally do not subscribe to) ...

            Sleeping lion's posture ... Traditionally the position generally recommended for dying is to lie down on the right side, taking the position of "the sleeping lion," which is the posture in which Buddha died. The left hand rests on the left thigh; the right hand is placed under the chin, closing the right nostril.

            It is true that the Buddha, several times in the old Suttas, is said to have reclined when he had a backache ...

            No man has had a greater inflience on the spiritual development of his people than Siddartha Gautama. Born in India in the sixth century BC into a nation hungry for spiritual experience, he developed a religious and moral teaching that, to this day, brings comfort and peace to all who practise it. This comprehensive biography examines the social, religious and political conditions that gave rise to Buddhism as we now know it.

                    As a few of you here know, I have spent much of the last month in this landscape. I have made pilgrimages here since I was a very young man. My wish is to eventually become part of the oak leaves, pine needles, and myriad of biodiversity that these mountains embrace

                            Hi Kakunen;

                            The English word is an Altar. Butsudan is an Altar for Buddha
