Looking at Settings now, I'm seeing more stuff than was there earlier (says I) (scrolls four screenfuls instead of two -- in browser on laptop). So I checked off signature and refreshed, but not only am I not seeing my signature, I'm not seeing anyone else's, so there may be something more to do around that.
Thank you for all ya do!

It looks like youtube videos no longer show with just the url.
There is a button you can use to add video, or you can use textCode:[video] video link [/video]
Code:[video=youtube_share;lSdBtoIIYT4]https://youtu.be/lSdBtoIIYT4[/video]

Don’t know if it’s a bug, or maybe something that needs more tweaking, but .. Latest Activity button doesn’t show as “new activity” the posts where Comments have been recently made to replies. Sometimes it does not even show as “new activity” the threads that have new replies. It’s quite impossible to see if there was a reply to a comment or stay on top of a threaded discussion

I'll take this up as an issue, too.
I believe in the system, there are 1st, 2nd, 3rd level postings.
1st level is the posting itself. 2nd level the reply. 3rd level the comment.
There is no comment possible on the posting itself, only to a reply (3rd level comment on 2nd level reply).
The "new activity" searches only 2 levels deep, so it finds 1st level postings and 2nd level replies, NOT 3rd level comments.
I believe there is a "unread" module somewhere we might want to use which functions in a different way, as the name suggests, but I have not yet looked deeper into it.

Maybe the expectation is that you subscribe to threads; which brings its own problems...
If it's a question of levels, there should be no limits, and comments can be threaded for many levels.
I used to use the See all unread thing on the previous forum, so I saw all threads that were new or had new comments. I think that's more practical for those of us who want to see everything that's happening. -
I believe vbulletin works with those 3 fixed levels and there are no more. so no comments on comments, only comments on the replies.. which is what we ran into earlier, as there is no comment button under a comment, just under the reply.
edit: and when you click on "Forum" and there on "New Topics" under the headline, I believe that shows threads with new comments, too.

Hi everyone,
I wanted to do sort of a "mega post" of things we know are different (or broken) but that were not so bad that we couldn't go ahead and launch today. In no particular order.
### Search Is ... Funky
And this might impact other features...
The search "indexing" process is not working correctly (it is throwing errors when trying to update the search tables). We spent many hours on this issue and simply could not resolve it. It works "good enough" for us to launch, but it is definitely broken. We can see from the error logs that it is not working with the full dataset. To make matters more complicated, the new version of the forum uses the search internally for a LOT more functionality (so this could be why there are some odd things showing up in the channels, and why the "latest activity" is less than helpful).
Which is all to say, this is broken, we know it is broken, but are unsure just how widespread the impact is and at some point had to triage to move on to the rest of the launch. Tomorrow we will seek assistance from vBulletin support and hopefully get this addressed.
### URL Tags for Videos No Longer Render
As people have pointed out, bbcode "URL" tags for YouTube videos no longer automatically embed as videos. This is sort of "by design". Bbcode has long differentiated between the "URL" tag (link to content) and the "VIDEO" tag (link to video - with optional embed). This was something bypassed to the old forum with a plugin that no longer exists, and it actually had some negative side effects (for instance, there is a setting to limit how many youtube embeds can appear in a given post since they slow down page rendering - but this was always bypassed by using URL tags instead).
We made the decision to deprecate this functionality. We do so much with video at Treeleaf at this point that it actually makes sense to be able to choose between a linked video and an embedded video. The plan is:
1. Update key videos (recent Zazenkai for example) to use the "VIDEO" tag so they embed.
2. Make sure folks use "VIDEO" tags moving forward when videos should actually be embedded.
3. If a post has 20 videos, to not make them all embeds (which really slows down older devices).
### The Tapatalk Plugin Is Not Installed
As of right now, Tapatalk will not work with the forum. This is because Tapatalk requires a proprietary plugin to be installed on the forum (one which allows them complete access to the forum data). The new forum is much more responsive on mobile. The new forum also supports a custom app (e.g. we could have a Treeleaf app that is a first class app on our devices).
So for the time being, a few of the engineer types (like this guy, I'm talking about myself) would like to see if we can get the new forum working well enough to not need to support Tapatalk. *But this is not set in stone.*
### Usernames with Diacriticals Cannot Log In
Nor do they always show up in some database / search queries...
Another huge issue we ran into this weekend was the need to switch how extended charactersets are encoded (e.g. diacritical marks, emoji, etc.). We went from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8 (for nerds who are curious). This change caused all kinds of interesting side effects ("interesting" like load spikes, server crashes). One of those which we haven't come up with a solution for yet is that members with extended characters (diacritical marks, hiragana, emoji, etc.) in their usernames cannot log in (because those characters were encoded differently in the old version than in the new version).
This impacts 13 members. One of whom we were able to get fixed by simply removing the diacritical mark. But the others may not be so easy.
Long story short: if you have a username with something other than a letter or number in it and you cannot log in, reach out to one of us via email (support -at- treeleaf.org) and we will work with you to get it resolved.
Otherwise hopefully we can come up with a solution in the next few days.
### Email Delivery is Broken for Some Services
iCloud is the one we KNOW is broken...
This actually isn't because of the migration. But as part of the migration we changed our email delivery system and now have much better error reporting... And we discovered that email to @icloud.com addresses is not always deliverable.
Again, for the nerds this is probably an SPF/DKIM/DMARC thing (it is NOT a blacklisting thing). We will get this addressed soon.
### The Permission System Changed
For most folks the changes to the permission system should be invisible. However, if you try to access an area of the forum and get a permission denied error (kesa sewing for example), please let one of us know. Its likely we just missed you when manually updating permissions.
### The New Forum Is ... Alot
There are definitely some new features that sometimes caused higher server loads during testing. There may "service unavailable" type messages from time to time. If you see them, just try again in a few minutes. On the medium term list is possibly upgrading our hosting to address this.
### Image Posting Is ... Different
Uploading photos is a little better now (you can upload an avatar and actually crop it inline, there is no longer an "avatar" AND a "profile image", you can upload slightly larger images, etc.). However, there are still fairly tight limits on file sizes. Some of this is because of the software, and some of it is because of our hosting constraints.
As we work through the previous issue (e.g. the new forum is ... alot) we may be able to up these limits (to something that at least feels like 2009 instead of 1999).
### There is a New URL
Not a "bug", but you may have noticed that the website is still treeleaf.org (and Treeleaf "NOW" is still treeleaf.org/now), but the forum is now forum.treeleaf.org. This is by design (it separated the hosting requirements of the forum from the hosting requirements of the website - more "agile" and futureproof).
It also should not impact day to day usage at all. And ALL old URLs should automagically redirect to their new home on the new site / server. But if you find broken links, do let one of us know!
### New Emoji
Again, not a "bug", but I've been informed that some folks were looking forward to new emoji with a new system, but its just the same ol' emoji... Good news - we can add new emoji MUCH more easily now. If you have specific requests, let us know - but also understand that will be a ... lower priority for the time being. :P
Ok, thats it for now. HUGE UPS to Kotei and Koushi who put in LONG hours this weekend to make this happen. We are going to all have some growing pains and will continue to find borked features I'm sure. But I truly believe it will be worth it - particularly in terms of allowing us to grow and do new things in the future.
Gassho,
Sekishi

Looking now on my Mac, it seems like the default font is bold, and bolding it makes a bold-bold font. It would be easier to read if the default font were not bold (or perhaps it's a Demi-bold). The kerning makes it a bit tight when the font is bold.I know nothing.Comment

I got an email notification for a comment on a thread that I hadn't looked at in a long time. It turns out that I am subscribed to that thread. Looking on the new forum, I'm subscribed to a lot of threads that I never subscribed to. I have a feeling that it's something that Tapatalk did, but it would be best to delete all those. When I look in my profile, I see that I'm subscribed to 439 threads. (!!!) Apparently, I can click 439 buttons to unsubscribe to them, but could there be an easier way? I assume this only affects Tapatalk users, because I don't recall seeing Subscribe buttons on the old forum.
And apparently I'm "subscribed" to 26 users, and don't see any way to unsubscribe.I know nothing.Comment

I'm sure you've seen it, but some avatars show as round, some as vertical ovals, and some - particularly Jundo's - as horizontal ovals. He looks squashed. :-)I know nothing.Comment

Hi, something strange is happening to me, I can see everyone's avatar pictures if I am not logged in, when I log in to my account, they disappear.
Thanks!

Hi Guys,
Keeps being lovely work. Special thanks to Sekishi today for saving us from a high level attack by servers in China!
One question: I cannot respond to thread comments, like this one? I don't see how to respond to Myojin here:
First of all I recognise that I've only been actively studying Buddhism for a few years so I may well be completely off the mark. I've been reading Bodhidharma recently (The Zen Teaching of Bodhidharma, translated by Red Pine), and he is pretty explicit that seeing ones own nature is the entry to the dharma way. He's really
I am not really so crazy about how thread comments appear in the middle of threads. Seems to distract from the flow of the discussion, the same problem as on Facebook and, especially, reddit, where comments just get lost in the maze. No?
Also, the little picture of two mountains that seems to appear on links like the above? Can we replace that with some default picture, e.g., the Treeleaf leaf ...images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTCyb9xX_d0divcYrX2SPzAmwciJ6K9uW8ZlPXNxB9X5S28Q7RZcxyz1KBg8ShFH53qhmc&usqp=CAU.jpg
Thank you!

Hello Jundo,
There are original posts (the first in the thread). You can reply to those.
There are the replies, you can comment on or quote (which is technically a reply to the original post, too)
You can not comment on a post, you can not reply to a comment and you can not comment on a comment.
So in the case you mentioned you would have to comment on your reply, Myojin also commented on and it would be sorted under his comment.
Looking at the top of the thread, there are "Posts" - "Latest Activity" - "Photos".
When you click on "Latest Activity" it shows you the thread in a different way, without the comments being sorted into the thread,
separate and with newest comment on top (sorted by date/time descending).
That can be defined as the default view in your user settings.
I am not yet sure what to do about the picture indicating a link. But it should be possible to customize.

Kotei.Last edited by Kotei; 05-14-2024, 06:25 AM. -
I think the problem is that you can't quote a comment to reply to it. (Other than manually copying text, then pasting it in quotes.) Replies seem to miss a bit of context because of this. This said, sometimes replies on the old forum had so many quotes that they were't that easy to follow either. Personally, I don't like the way the comment system works, but I'll get used to it. I would expect to be able to reply directly to comments, rather to posts; it seems illogical the way it works now. -
I believe the idea from the vbulletin people is that there are replies to the original posting and replies to replies and that comments are kind of less important remarks, even lacking a real editor and possibility to include certain elements.
I am looking at it in a way that the old forum had only original posts and replies. No comments.
Not sure which approach I like better. I tend to like what I am used to, so I'll give myself some time to adjust. hmm.
