Shoka's mount fuji climb update ...

Well, with another typhoon blowing threw Japan today, this week's Talk for Shoka's visit on travels being 'just where you are, who you are with' has special meaning ...

Aug 19th-20th Treeleaf Weekly Zazenkai with SHOKA!!
Please sit a Special Zazenkai with our long time member SHOKA (http://www.treeleaf.org/forums/member.php?14551-Shoka), flying in from the USA via Taiwan. PLEASE NOTE THAT, AS SHE IS LITERALLY COMING TO ZAZEN from the AIRPORT, THERE IS SOME CHANCE OF A SMALL DELAY IN OUR START TIME as I run to pick her up. Please patiently sit

The Buddha Mountain has no up or down, and each step is the Total Arrival! The Sun and Moon are ever present even when hidden by clouds.

An update from Shoka on their planned overnight climb to watch the sunset on the peak of Mt. Fuji (she said I can share) ...

    =================

    Jundo,

I thought I should give you an update in case you are watching the weather. We did make it to fuji last night and began hiking in pouring rain around 10 pm. Luckily that cleared up. But there were hikers coming down the trail. The first we meet was a foreigner and was worried about the typhoon so headed down. We continued on because we checked the detailed weather and thought it would be fine.

The sky was amazing as we climbed, clouds floated around the moutian below us. The sky cleared some and we saw the moon and stars. We continued on our way. Then another group came down. The leader was pretty insistent that the typhoon was coming and we should turn back. He was Japanese and appeared to be well prepared with his group. After that warning we took some time to recheck the weather. The storm was moving much faster than before and would hit the moutian around 9 am. We climbed to the next marker and then talked options. We decided the best option was to head back down. So we took a picture of where we got to and turned around.

Coming down we hiked through the clouds, some pouts of pouring rain and lots of wind. We made it down to station 5 around 2:30 and found some space on the floor in the lounge and tried to get some sleep.

The typhoon is currently here, so I was told buses don't come up the mountain and we will have to wait.

Hopefully in a couple hours we will be in a bus on our way back. But until then we wait.

    What an adventure!

We are now down the moutian and waiting for a train. Hopefully we will be back in tokyo in 2 hours or so.

There are so many moments and lessons from this adventure.

I'm glad they are safe and well.

Once upon a time I was trapped in the middle of a hurricane in the Pacific and it was a rather interesting adventure. Hope Shoka continues to enjoy the trip.

Probably best that they came down. All worldly things are impermanent, but no need to rush it!

Typhoon Mindulle lashes Tokyo, heads north to Tohoku and Hokkaido
            JAPAN TIMES
            AUG 22, 2016

Typhoon Mindulle lashed the greater Tokyo area on Monday, dumping heavy rain and leaving at least one person dead and 29 injured in storm-related incidents.

Storm water coursed down usually placid rivers and left many streets flooded in the Kanto region. ...

It had maximum sustained winds of 126 kph and gusts as high as 180 kph. It was the equivalent of a category 1 hurricane

Somebody posted this on Youtube, what Mt. Fuji is like in a typhoon ... and that is in the daytime, not a night hike ...

Thanks everyone for your kinda words.

Getting back to Tokyo was an adventure on its own. We started to realize something wasn't good because people were running for buses. As we were waiting to buy our tickets to go somewhere down the moutian, I could hear the lady on the phone saying another bus isn't coming? And then holding the current bus. We bought tickets and then got in line, praying for people to squish in more. Me and my siblings made it and crammed a little more to fit the two people behind us. But the door won't close and they had to get off.

From there we took a train and then got stopped by the typhoon in Otsuki. There we waited for almost 8 hours. The typhoon was too strong over the moutian area we would go through.

My sister and I were wearing clothes that had gotten soaked while waiting for the bus, the train seats were small and the train packed. I could only imagine in the US how people would have handled that. But everyone was kind and patient.

After about 4 hours the station staff came around with drinks, snacks and apologies. Everyone was grateful and understanding.

We did finally make it back, after 3 trains.

Here are a few pictures from fuji

Glad to see you safe and well, Shoka and family. What amazing stories, photos and videos. Yes, people in the US probably would not have been so gracious in that situation, one of several reasons I admire and respect the Japanese.

That video of Mt Fuji in a typhoon will stay with me for a long time, such powerful imagery. Love it.
