May 17-18th Treeleaf Weekly Zazenkai - Life is a River, This World is a River ...

The power of wisdom is deep in time. ...
Thus, it was said in ancient times, in the Lotus Sutra, “It is like the river crossing meeting a boat.”
The meaning of this phrase is that the river crossing cannot be separated from a boat.
That the river crossing does not hinder the river crossing is called a boat.
Spring is long and ice melts.

    Dear All,

Please sit our Treeleaf Zazenkai for 90 minutes with Zazen, Heart Sutra and more. We meet virtually in our Zoom Scheduled Sitting Room here:
The password (if needed): << dogen >>

For local times, please check the Practice Calendar here: TREELEAF NOW >> ( 10am Japan Saturday morning, NY 9pm, LA 6pm Friday night, London 2am and Paris 3am Saturday morning) or sit this Zazenkai any time thereafter here:
    .

However, "one way" live sitters are encouraged to come into the Zoom sitting, and just leave the camera and microphone turned off.

00:00 – 00:15 CEREMONY (HEART SUTRA in English) and Dedication
    00:15 – 00:45 ZAZEN
    00:45 – 00:55 KINHIN
    00:55 – 01:25 ZAZEN
    01:25 – 01:30 VERSE OF ATONEMENT & FOUR VOWS
01:30 - 01:45(?) Informal Tea Time (All Welcome)

ATTENTION: Everyone, when rising for Kinhin or Ceremonies after Zazen, get up slowly, don't rush, hold something stable, you won't be "late", so TAKE YOUR TIME! Make sure you are careful getting up!

PS - There is no "wrong" or "right" in Zazen ... yet here is a little explanation of the "right" times to Bow (A Koan) ...

I know no Japanese but have this bit from the opening of the Hojoki:

        ゆく河の流れは絶えずして、しかも、もとの水にあらず。淀みに浮かぶうたかたは、かつ消え、かつ結びて、久 しくとどまりたる例なし。

'The river never stops running, and the water is never the same as before. The bubbles are floating on the pool; some bubbles are disappearing and some are coming up; they will never be the same.'

Actually, I was actually looking for that, Roshi. That is it. Zen Saying: One Mind, Think Alike.

I will read it at the Zazenkai tomorrow, as we will have a Japanese guest who does not speak English.

There were birds (and barking dogs) at one of Bankei's talks, and he said:

"In the course of listening to my talk, if a dog barks outside the temple, you recognize it as the voice of a dog; if a crow caws, you know it's a crow....Even though you're not deliberately trying to hear or not to hear these different sounds, you recognize each one the moment it appears, and this is proof of the Buddha Mind, unborn and marvelously illuminating. This not deliberately trying to see or hear is the Unborn."

                            Jundo,

Thank you so much! This is my Ino debut. I’m not much of a singer or chanter… or so I thought. The Heart Sutra flowed through my heart and my lungs with ease.

Despite my anxiety and fear that I was going to mess up the entire Service, I proceeded on with the anxiety and fear beside me. I did not push them away as I normally would do. Instead, I allowed them to stay right here with me.

Once the ceremony began, something happened inside of me. The fear and anxiety were no longer screaming in my ears. They fell silent. It felt as though the only thing that existed in the Universe was the beat of the Mokugyo, the striking of the Kesu, and The Heart Sutra, flowing from my lungs with love and sincerity. Time stood still. I chanted for all beings.

To have the privilege to be part of Zazenkai Service, I am deeply honoured. Thank you Jundo, Bion, Kotei, Onshō, and to my Sangha family. Truly, Treeleaf is my second family.

                            I love you all.
