May 24th-25th Treeleaf Weekly Zazenkai - Sacred Birdy Poop

    tsuku.jpg

Why do birds poop on Buddha's head? (A Koan)
During the Muzong period of the Tang Dynasty, Cui Qun visited the East Temple in Hunan one day.
When he saw a bird pooping on the head of a Buddha statue, he declared to the abbot (Chan Master Ruhui)
that a bird must have no Buddha-nature, as this was disrespectful to the Buddha.
The abbot responded that birds do have Buddha-nature, stating,
"Why does it not poop on its own head?"
COMMENTARY: Birds choose to poop on Buddha's head because Buddha-nature is charitable, tolerates all beings,
and never cares about external things. Birds also understand this.

[From a Commentary on the Jingde Record of the Transmission of the Lamp]

Thank you everyone. I had a rare opportunity to sit with you live this evening. I have no idea what happened at the end there. The sound completely cut out on my side so didn’t hear any bells or chanting.

Thank you, all! It is so good to get together every week and practice! Birdies were superb backup singers for Jundo

Oh yes, especially about the 17:00 mark. They checked us out and, I am sure, understood that we are pretty harmless.

Thank you everyone and have a good flight, swallows.
Be careful with that bird poop, with its alkaline features it might teach us a lesson about impermanence regarding the lacquer and other surfaces, it stays on too long, too.
              Gassho,

Happy to sit with y'all this morning. We used to have Barn Swallows on our porch each summer at our first home. In our current space, it's Eastern Phoebes. Less garrulous, but still cute. Off to clean some poop from the railings...

                    Lovely.
Just love how we can be thankful of what shit is given.
And give space to the beeings around us.
