There is certainly no shortage of zen Buddhist books, videos, audios etc. I've gone through periods where I didn't read anything. Now I probably spend about equal time sitting and reading. I'm fascinated by ancient Indian culture, ancient Taoist culture, even Jesus was so cool. I think the danger of education is that the ego uses it to make you separate from experience, and a false sense of intellectual superiority. If these facts and concepts don't point you to practice, to just sitting then it's probably a wastage.

I'm not particularly interested in enrolling in college classes but can't help thinking there must be some formal training, or educational opportunities out there. Anyone?

Are you maybe asking about the training to become a Zen priest?

No Tom. I have no such aspirations. I would be very content being a boddhisatva (sp) and being of service that way.

Aren't we all bodhisattvas already, just our delusions keep us from remembering it?

the Buddhadharma is good stuff. Be careful when you get super excited. That enthusiasm is impermanent too. Whatever you decide to do just stay the course to the best of your abilities under your set of circumstances. (right Effort) There are so many amazing resources to study Buddhism out there. Everything you need is right in front of you. Maybe you'll find yourself in robes. Maybe you'll find yourself exactly where you are right now. Maybe something in the middle.

Well the world needs plenty of those, silently and peacefully doing the work of the Buddha.

We all have bodhisattva moments each day. The kindness you showed a stranger. The overworked co-worker you took some work off of. The large tip you gave a struggling waitress.

Remember that everything changes, we will not "become" bodhisattvas and be one forever. Bodhisattva actions happen in a single moment. Our practice helps these moments occur more frequently and though this we work toward saving all sentient beings from suffering. One moment at a time, one act of compassion at a time.
