    All Conditions of Life ...

Hello fellow Treeleafer's ... I just wanted to share another experience I faced today. Life sure has a way of showing us some beautiful lessons if we are open to receiving them. =)

While out for a walk with Bodhi I came across this little beauty hanging out in the grass. I stopped and in that moment I was joyful and excited to see such a beautiful little creature.

The wind had picked up a bit a blew this little guy off the grass, so I reached down to give him a hand. He accepted my offering and clung to my finger, again in that moment I was joyful and excited to have this beauty now on my hand.

All of a sudden he fell off, so I helped him back up, but again, he fell off. Right away I could see that this little guy was dying and on his way out of this visible world. In that moment I felt sadness.

With the proceeding moments I just took the time to sit there and hold him in my hand ... allowing this and the moment to follow unfold in the way they were intended to unfold. In doing so, in that moment I feel still, grateful, and at peace.

So thank you little Dragonfly for giving me the opportunity to be present with joy, to be present with sadness, and to be present with peace and gratitude ... each moment being their very own, yet being just that one moment.

Aw s/he was beautiful. Thank you! My German Shepherd took his job of guarding our house from dragonflies very seriously in his day, he will pass into Boundless Nirvana soon and have all the beautiful dragonflies he wants to bark at forever. It is such a privilege to live this life and share it with all the other numberless beings every day.

Thank you for sharing, Shingen. You are so fortunate for having this experience, and being able to fully see it for what it was, instead of just a bug that needed to be squashed.

You have a very kind heart.

I am so sorry that you have to make the decision to put him to sleep. It's gut wrenching. I know. In the past I could not be involved with the process and sent others in my place. I grew the courage to be present when my last dog died. I took my son with me. I gently held his head and stared into his eyes while the vet gave him his medicine. Then it was over. A lesson in life and death for me and my son who was 9 at the time.

It is walking the razor's edge of impermanence... there we are, naked and vulnerable as we say goodbye to our beloved pet that we have cherished so very much... but it is also the greatest act of compassion, as we are ending the suffering of another being and choosing their welfare over our own in that moment. Witnessing the bravery of children like your son as they learn this is breathtakingly poignant, my younger daughter has willingly subjected herself to this also, and will again. And Shingen's post reminds us how important it is to be fully present with this beautiful impermanence... deep bows.

Oh so true Jakuden ... I remember when I had to put my Border Collie Charlie down after 18 years of joy and memories. Funny to say he was my best friend, he was there when I needed him the most with compassion and love. My vet is an amazing person (you remind me of her Jakuden) and she brought out blankets and toys, gave us time to sit, play, and to just BE! When the time came, that stillness, that peace, that gratitude was there ... allowing the moment to natural arise. The tears that came were tears of sadness, but also of joy and gratitude for those 18 years. =)

Jakuden, Jishen, Shingen, I've been there too. Two years ago I saw my beloved dog take his last breath. He was suffering so badly with lung cancer and a chronic tear in his back knee. We ended his suffering in the most peaceful way, but still, almost every day my heart is saddened that he is gone.

I have a new dog now, and I know the day will come when I have to do the same thing. These sentient beings have much to teach us about the beauty and impermanence of life.
