      Hello,

      Am reminded of a fencing lesson. When holding a sabre during a fight, hold it as you would a bird: firm enough to keep it from escaping, light enough it's not crushed.

        Glad you all found this useful too. It looks like there's all kinds of interesting things buried in the 10-year archive of Treeleaf. Sometimes it feels like venturing deep into the woods of Treeleaf on a pilgrimage to discover ancient wisdom.

        Kliff, I've been in that situation before too, especially getting progressively more angry about more and more abstract things. It also reminds me of the old Zen joke:

        One zen student said, "My teacher is the best. He can go days without eating."
        The second said, "My teacher has so much self-control, he can go days without sleep."
        The third said, "My teacher is so wise that he eats when he's hungry and sleeps when he's tired."

            I just posted this comment on our facebook page which linked to this thread ...

            Shikantaza is a powerful practice, yet gentle. A little each day shouldn't make anyone sick (although anything ... even air or water ... can hurt in excess). I am not saying never take some time off now and then either. However, generally, like daily exercise, showering or brushing the teeth ... it should fit into each day without any difficulty.
