    Book club suggestion

    I don't know what's planned for the future for the book club, but I just re-read Opening the Hand of Thought, and it's definitely one of the most important books I've ever read about zen. How about adding that to the list for future books to discuss?

    Gassho, and Happy New Year,

      Hi Kirk,

      there's some funny synchronicity going on with this book this week... I think it's been mentioned on 3 different threads! Anyway, take a look here, there's a discussion group starting on January 4th!

      I have seen the Book club thread on the forum however this is more a general question. Is it allowable to start a thread discussion about a book and ask for insights from others on the forum? I have read many books but feel that my knowledge alone isn't enough to get the "whole story" from what I have read. I am

      Please take my words with a big grain of salt. I know nothing. Wisdom is only found in our whole-hearted practice together.

        Hi Guys,

        Happy New Year Again to Everyone!

        Because of the above interest, and as we just finished "Grass Hut" in the book club, I am going to move these readings of "Opening the Hand" to our Treeleaf Bookclub as our next book starting this weekend.

        Welcome to our book club, where we travel through helpful books on Zen without getting lost in words.

        Although we read it in the book club just a couple of years ago, it is one of the modern classics of our Shikantaza Way and deserves our full attention. Although we read it rather slowly last time, this time we will go rather fast about at the pace that was suggested above. Look for further information in the book club this weekend.

        For those who do not yet have the book (every Shikantaza sitter should), it is available partially online while you order it.

        For over thirty years, Opening the Hand of Thought has offered an introduction to Zen Buddhism and meditation unmatched in clarity and power. This is the revised edition of Kosho Uchiyama's singularly incisive classic. This new edition contains even more useful material: new prefaces, an index, and extended endnotes, in addition to a revised glossary. As Jisho Warner writes in her preface, Opening the Hand of Thought "goes directly to the heart of Zen practice... showing how Zen Buddhism can be a deep and life-sustaining activity." She goes on to say, "Uchiyama looks at what a person is, what a self is, how to develop a true self not separate from all things, one that can settle in peace in the midst of life." By turns humorous, philosophical, and personal, Opening the Hand of Thought is above all a great book for the Buddhist practitioner. It's a perfect follow-up for the reader who has read Zen Meditation in Plain English and is especially useful for those who have not yet encountered a Zen teacher.

        Here is the Amazon listing as well;
