Shocking news. We had just ordered his newly released book. Such a gifted vital man.
i do hope his passing is gentle and peace imbued. I will miss him and his inspired writings.

bowing to Muryo Roshi in gratitude and deep respect!

the weathered face of muryo always gave me comfort
maybe it was that he shared how he secretly drafted sentences during zazen
or the way I heard him say Pay Attention! on a tape I played
over and over in my car

thus leave us these old pillars of zen
          not by falling like trees
but by becoming lighter and lighter until
they take off in a heron's flight
          in fall or spring

zen is a way to lead you to your long lost home
          may you arrive
oh muryo may your flight go well

I will never forget how you spoke about cranes

There is an excellent piece on Matthiessen, his life, writing, and Zen practice in the New York Times. What I found particularly significant was the story of his travel to Auschwitz with Bernie Glassman. They sat zazen on the train platforms where the arriving prisoners were selected for death. Their reflections of that place and Glassman's remarks on human nature are very sobering.
