I was wondering that too Hoyu! I looked up the chracter on my lineage papers and it says Shu, but I thought it sounded like Su during the ceremony...so I'm not sure if it's Shu or Su or maybe even Tsu. But I'm tsure Jundo will let us know for shure.

Hi all,
The name of such a robe is funzoe, clothing of shity rags, made of rags ( here furoshiki, cloth for wrapping in Japan). This robe is generally for just sitting, begging ang special occasions ( ceremonies, rituals). In our Soto sangha you have to receive a special authorisation to sew it and wear it. The basic reason is that we don t really want to end up with a rainbow like fashion show and competion between sitters, we want to keep it low key with muted colours, darkish hues. I made this okesa for the winter retreat in Belgium and, talking about fashion, it suits Jundo better than the stupid old fool. I am gathering old scraps and kimono fabric to make another one which I might keep( might... Because it is an old habit of mine to give okesa away, jundo already has one rakusu and two kesa that i have sewn).
Gassho
Taigu
PS : if you have old beautiful japanese fabric, donations are accepted, i will turn them into nyohoe robes.R

Congratulations honored novice priests. Watched most of the ceremony on my cell phone. Everything about this is amazing. The buddha way is inconceivable.
