    Hi Bion and Hi Kotei,
Thank you. It is fascinating how we all express this understanding and difference. I love how we in this wonderful Sangha have such individual understanding and at the same time share such unity. A strong connection with each other that is strengthened by exchange of opinions.

It’s almost as if all we think and say is a product of specific conditions
Discussion is always good ( in moderate amounts haha )

I think of it as like circumcision ... Jewkai. But we use Manjushri's ... ManJewshri's flaming sword, which cuts all things into one!

        Just kidding.

It is what it is. Let each person find the meaning in their own heart.

I'm still just starting to learn. I'm not a teacher. Please don't take anything I say too seriously. I already take myself too seriously!

              Greetings Paul,

In every zen buddhist sangha I have attended (all of them in USA), jukai is like baptism, it is a ceremony of sort of officially becoming a buddhist. But most important it is literally a ceremony of "receiving the precepts" which are guidelines and aspirations to living an ethical life. Being a buddhist does not preclude belonging to a religion. It does not involve a commitment to a particular teacher or lineage or sect. Of course it is not about worshiping Gautama Buddha. Mel Weitzman Roshi of Berkeley Zen Center wrote a wonderful talk about the first five precepts, saying that there is a proscriptive and prescriptive side to each precept - for example - the first precept - the proscriptive side is "do not kill", the prescriptive side is to "cherish life". my favorite versions of "do not steal" is "do not take that which is not freely given" - the freely part to me is very important as so often, in my sad and desperate state, I have taken advantage of people's kindness - not for money or things, but for physical assistance, an ear to listen, etc. So this is something I always need to watch out for.

              thank you for your time,
              rowan
