In addition to what has been said, it also sounds/reads like your work may not be providing you an adequate challenge to keep you invested, perhaps figuring out ways to improve your area of expertise? I dont know enough about the field to say more.
Also Kyotai, your post hit me hard for totally unrelated reasons and answered a question i have been silently struggling with for some time now, thank you.

Well everyone has different work ethics. I'd say you are probably unchallenged. If you're not getting fired then they feel your job is good enough. Not giving your all isn't stealing. But maybe you could have gained much more by giving more. Who is to say?

        Hi Sam,

I think at the end of the day if they are satisfied with your work then there isn't anything to worry about. What other considerations are there? I know there are some things such as people judging you harshly and what not but if it doesn't affect your employment I would just roll with it.

Thanks all for your replies. My company doesn't fire people easily.

I have decided to treat my work (and rest of life) as practice and keep giving my best. For past two days I kept working full 8 hours with stretches of 45 min work and 5-10 min breaks (sesshin style). I noticed (just like zazen) my mind wanted to be somewhere else (watch youtube, browse for fun, check my phone etc) but as I noticed that, I came back to the most important work item to be done next. I am doing all this as an expression of my self expecting nothing ("good for nothing" work)

Sorry for going over 3 sentences

Out of curiosity what kind of programming work do you do? I'm also a programmer so no need to shy away from technical details.

So like, data analytics? Or you focus more on database implementation/management for a big company?

Neat, what kind of tech stack do you work with? I'm going to guess Java on the backend, or maybe python?

Reading this thread \I look back over my 35 year career in telecommunications. The first 15 years Were spent as a Technician where it was easy to relate to the customers you are helping as you are in direct contact with them every day. Then as I was promoted into Maintenance |Engineering it was exciting; still directly providing a product. But, as I progressed into planning and provisioning and then circuit administration it was harder to envision the effects of you efforts. However, I then found appreciation in doing for the people that were dependent on me. I have to admit there were times I felt I was at the wrong end of the shit stick but, through it all right effort and intention won out.

This really sticks out to me, one of the things I work on at my work is building in house tools for my co-workers to use, I get to interact with them, find out how best to help them out. I remember when I was in school I did a job at a company that did software project contracts for various businesses and such, and to me they were always faceless corporations, I felt far less invested in the outcome of what I worked on... I mean maybe I'd think about it differently now (this was before I discovered Buddhism and started thinking about things as being more interconnected, right effort and all that).
