    Non-traditional Heart Sutra Chant

Straight up, this is just one of the coolest things I've seen in a very long time. Hey Jundo, maybe you could do this at the next Zazenkai. It doesn't look too hard...

My husband found this and sent it to me a while ago. I'm into it. Thank you for posting it.

Please excuse any indication that I am trying to teach anything. I am a priest in training and have no qualifications or credentials to teach Zen practice or the Dharma.

      Thank you. It is great.

The priest's name is Yogetsu Akasaka. He is Soto. Apparently the story is that his father is a temple priest, and Yogetsu became a priest about 5 years ago to eventually take over the family temple. He spent time in Australia, the US and elsewhere. He has a bunch of recordings, most Buddhist themed.

Yogetsu Akasaka is a Zen Buddhist priest, live-looping artist, and meditation musician merging ancient traditions with modern soundscapes. His performances combine handpan melodies, beatboxing, and Buddhist mantras, creating transformative, improvised music that embodies Zen’s philosophy of treasuring each moment. During the pandemic, his “Heart Sutra Beatbox Remix” went viral on YouTube, reaching millions. This success led to performances at festivals like Wonderfruit (Thailand), Shambala (UK), and Colors of Ostrava (Czech Republic), as well as at SXSW in 2023 and 2024. Yogetsu also brings his unique fusion of music and mindfulness to wellness conferences. His workshops, including Voice Meditation and Active Meditation, integrate breathwork with improvised music, helping participants reconnect with themselves and experience healing through Zen-inspired mindful presence.

I think that this is his temple in Fukui Prefecture. Apparently, they like cats, and are famous for taking in and nursing sick strays.

Hmmm. He surely speaks English, so maybe I can invite him here for a Special Zazenkai/Concert? That would be a first. Let me mull that.

This makes me think of Kanho Yakushiji although Kanho is Rinzai.. But his rendition of Hannya Shingyo is phenomenal.

Kanho is a really good singer. There are various versions of the Heart Sutra and he’s got various other sutras plus a few albums with his previous duo Kissaquo.
