That's why, as Allen says, those cows are always mooing.

There are funny accounts of those pesky Rinzai Monk's mooing in 'the three pillars of zen.' That's one of the reasons I chose Soto.

Well, the animals may have one up on us in that they don't seem to suffer as often from over-thinking, (although I have treated quite a few for anxiety and other behavioral issues that show they undoubtedly respond to stress in relatable ways), but my horses, dogs, cats and chickens still depend on me and my thinking brain to bring them dinner! Some species, like the thousands of dinosaur species that dominated the earth for millenia, disappeared without our interference. Perhaps if we wipe ourselves off the earth, eventually the octupi (octopuses?) will evolve into something that thinks a lot and will have similar issues to ours. But I think Jishin is right, we are all made of the same stuff and are occupying exactly the place we are supposed to occupy right here and now, as are the critters. I also love the sound of horses munching contentedly in the barn

Ok, I am guilty of finding the pleasure of animals much more centering than people....of course there are some exceptions. The song of a Canyon Wren, the bugling of an elk, the chorus of toads following a down pour of rain bring me joy. Guess that is why I spent a half century conserving wildlife habitat.
