    Daily Dogen

I have decided that, beginning on this arbitrary first day of the new year, I will read one fascicle of the Shobogenzo each day. Since there are 95 of them, I can read the entire book four times if I double up on 15 days. I think it would be very useful to have a daily dose of this work to become more familiar with it.

I fortunately was able to buy the Kindle edition of the Tanahashi translation some years ago when it was only about £20 (it's currently more than £60), so I can easily read it on my Kindle or my iPhone. I will be highlighting those passages that resonate with me so I can come back to them.

It’s somewhat daunting to read this book, but doing so in small daily doses makes it much more manageable.

    Happy new year, and gassho,

    Kirk

There is a wonderful idea. It would be very cool if you managed to cut and paste your favorite paragraph or a one sentence summary of what your take is on particular chapter.

I'm not sure if that would be appropriate here. It might be a bit much for the forum. If Jundo thinks a single thread - continuing this thread, for example - would be useful, then I'd be glad to post things.

In the meantime, if you use Twitter, I've set up a Twitter account to share some quotes from the Shobogenzo as I read them. Part of my motivation was to counter all the hatred on Twitter with some more motivational content.

Yes, I'm aware that many people don't use Twitter. I'll see if I can interest CNN in covering the story. ;-)

                        An please don't forget ...

                        How to Read Dogen
LONG POST A few excerpts for some tips and hints I've posted from time to time for those who want to dip into a bit of Shobogenzo ... ---- In my own "in a nutshell" description of how to approach Shobogenzo ... I often describe Dogen as a Jazzman, bending and re-livening the "standard tunes" of Zen

                        and

SIT-A-LONG with JUNDO: Dogen - A Love Supreme
Really gettin' DOGEN'S WILD SOUND is a lot like gettin' THIS WILD SOUND ... (Please give a listen, and keep it playing while you read the rest of this post) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEAYIJfTJ3U I've described Dogen as a JHANA JAZZ MAN-POET, riffing and free expressing-reexpressing-bending-straightening-unbinding

And just to announce, I am about finished with the first draft of my first official book ... Letters from Dogen. I am taking many sections of Shobogenzo and turning them into letters making them relevant to modern folks with modern problems. Stay Tuned. It is almost done.
