    Good source about Guanyin/Avalokitesvara

I know some facts about Avalokitesvara, but I'd like to know more about her history in depth. Ideally not too academic, but to have a good overview.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Kaitan,

Well, how much would you like to read: Essay, Book?

More interested in their history, religious meaning, place in Zen Buddhism? All of the foregoing?

In all seriousness, Wiki Roshi is usually pretty good for an overview:

    AND

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avalok...n%20Vietnamese).

Thanks Jundo, perhaps a short essay. Although Wikipedia is quite reliable, I wanted to know more in the context of Mount Putuo, since I'm planning to making a visit there, it's quite close to Shanghai and I just wanted to know some interesting facts.

        Hi Kaitan

Without picking and choosing, Guanyin/Kannon/Avalokitesvara/Chenrezig is the bodhisattva I have felt closest to throughout my practice in many Buddhist traditions.

You might find this piece helpful and there are links to YouTube talks at the end https://gcbptemple.org/wp/story-of-guan-yin/

You probably don't have time to read it now but there is also this book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...-of-compassion

Enjoy your trip and please take plenty of photographs. I looked at this website and there seem to be a great number of temples dedicated to her there: https://chinatripedia.com/putuo-moun...ed-to-guanyin/

I really enjoyed and highly recommend the book "Bodhisattva Archetypes: Classic Buddhist Guides to Awakening and Their Modern Expression," by Taigen Dan Lighton, a Soto Zen teacher. It has a lot more than just Avalokiteshvara in it, but it's a great start, and an easy read!

I'll make sure to take some nice pictures. Perhaps if it's possible I stay overnight and explore the island more carefully.

Oh! I have this book! The story of Kwan yin has drove me in my study of the dharma in an effort to express a bit of her compassion throughout my life.

The book is a decent read and covers quite a bit about the bodhisattva in the cultural context she arose in and how she is viewed in modernity. Good read.
