Thanks Jundo, perhaps a short essay. Although Wikipedia is quite reliable, I wanted to know more in the context of Mount Putuo, since I'm planning to making a visit there, it's quite close to Shanghai and I just wanted to know some interesting facts.
Without picking and choosing, Guanyin/Kannon/Avalokitesvara/Chenrezig is the bodhisattva I have felt closest to throughout my practice in many Buddhist traditions.

I really enjoyed and highly recommend the book "Bodhisattva Archetypes: Classic Buddhist Guides to Awakening and Their Modern Expression," by Taigen Dan Lighton, a Soto Zen teacher. It has a lot more than just Avalokiteshvara in it, but it's a great start, and an easy read!

Oh! I have this book! The story of Kwan yin has drove me in my study of the dharma in an effort to express a bit of her compassion throughout my life.
The book is a decent read and covers quite a bit about the bodhisattva in the cultural context she arose in and how she is viewed in modernity. Good read.
