[FutureBuddha] Is Zen a Cult of the Past? (3)

    3rd in a Series:

Is Zen and all Buddhism a cult of the past, narrowly believing that good methods are to be found only in what existed 50, 500 or 1000 years ago?

YES! ... if we limit ourselves only to those old ways, as beautiful and powerful as they are for so many of us.

NO! ... but only if we are cautiously open to new ways, in complement of the ancient ways, as means to rescue both individuals and humanity as a whole.

Let us now invite science and technology, medicine, new-biology, engineering, nanotech, genetics and coming advances in neuro-science to expand the amazing repertoire of Zen and Buddhist rituals and techniques helpful to realize our Vows.

I told you this before, but I am immediately reminded of all the things priests did to try to alleviate physical suffering for folks: special ceremonies for peace, to stop hunger, dharanis to prevent disasters or to honor protective deities, self-mummification to turn themselves into holy relics that would serve to bring prosperity and offer security, amulets that were magical etc …. Anything “available” was used.

Hopefully, we can try something beyond self-mummification ... although I will consider it.

By the way, we have such a fellow in the next town from Tsukuba. I can introduce you someday.
