Some photos I took at the Thich Quang Duc memorial (the Vietnamese monk who set himself on fire during the war). It's a gorgeous spot in Ho Chi Minh City, and a breathtakingly beautiful statue. For me, setting aside the history and the man it's memorializing, it's a wonderful representation of zazen.

                            Thank you.

It is actually a very controversial act among some Buddhists, and would be considered an act of taking sentient life by many (I lean such way). There are also some other cases, such as the Tibetan monks who set themselves on fire as political protest. I agree with Soto Zen teacher and activist Alan Senauke here ...

Hozan Alan Senauke reluctantly questions the dharmic implications and the strategic value of self-immolation as a tool for social change.

I lean that way myself, though he seems to be quite the hero (and considered a full blown bodhisattva) here in Vietnam. All the same I was blown away by the beauty of the memorial. I had that thought about it being a symbol of zazen before I knew what it was memorializing. On its own my first thought was that the flames could symbolize thoughts and emotions and worries swirling about as you sit still and allow them to do what they do. Then I read the plaque and like "oh, it's literally a guy a on fire."
