75) The Seventy-fifth Gate: Right view

Right view is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] we attain the noble path on which the superfluous is exhausted. (Nishijima/Cross)

Right view is a gate of reeling Dharma; it leads to exhaustion of desire and attainment of the noble path. (Tanahashi)

Gate Gatha:

May we, together with all buddhas;
Actualize Right View,
That we may attain the noble path on which the superfluous is exhausted.

1. Right view refers to seeing the nature of reality correctly, including the Four Noble Truths, the Three Universal Characteristics, and the Law of Karma. When one has Right View, they understand that craving and attachment lead to suffering, and they begin to let go of their desires. As a result, the exhaustion of desire occurs, and one can attain the noble path towards enlightenment.

2. The term "superfluous" in the Nishijima version refers to all things that are unnecessary and cause suffering, including desires, attachments, and delusions.

3. New Gate Gatha:

May we, with the light of discernment,
See the world with clarity.
May we embrace what leads to good,
And abandon what leads to misery.

Through Right View, it’s not that we not that we no longer desire. Right View helps us see how we drag desires around with us through our lives and how obsessively pursuour desires taints our lives.

Yes. Obsessively pursuing desire and attainment are extra burdens we carry with us through our lives.
