Actually, quite otherwise. Traditional Buddhist monastic cooking is vegetarian.

For consideration when information is being assembled.

In looking at options there seem to be two choices: very expensive and not-so-expensive. Having tried the not-so-expensive, I returned it because the materials were flimsy. So I followed directions and made my own set. That worked fine except for the sponge part. The material in the sponge added a really noxious taste. Any options for the spatula?

Meishin, have you every looked at a wooden waxing spatula? I know it sounds weird, but it is just the right side and shape, plus it is plain wood with no odour or taste. =)

Also, if you are handy with wood, you can always make one as well. =)

I too am a vegan James and every retreat that I have attended it vegetarian. Also, from my experience, they are very supportive if you have any food allergies as well. =)

I'm looking forward to assembling the necessary utensils. And I'm looking even more to these ceremonies and instruction.

              Hi everyone,

My deepest apologies for not posting here earlier - I am not so mindful sometimes!

So I talked it over with Jundo last month, and we decided to start the Oryoki circle in the early spring, after Ango and Jukai (maybe aim to start around February 1). If anyone has any feedback, let me know here (or drop me a PM).

And thank you Shoka for jolting me back awake on this topic! ;-)

              Gassho,

                        Thank you Sekishi,

I would like to participate in the Oryoki circle too. By the time it starts I hope my set of bowls will be delivered.
If not I will proceed with what I have here..(as Jundo suggests "it is perfectly find to make a set from bowls and ordinary
items already in your home and kitchen. No need for fancy-shmancy.
                        ")

With Jundo's reassurance I have decided to go ahead with Jukai, and please see my questions and comments on another page for I am 64 and the time is right. I am committed to Zen (Soto) and Treeleaf. I am at the beginning of the best times of my life.

Would like to know if this will still be held in view of the recent changes within the Sangha.
                              Thank you.
