    Opening Welcome Message from Seiko

Welcome to our Engaged Practices section, everyone. I am Seiko, and Jundo has asked me to stir things up here, activate our Sangha's work with engaged and charitable practices, and to get all involved!

So before we start. I'd like to welcome everyone to this section of Treeleaf and ask you all for your support. It can only work if you all join in.

If you'd like to keep this close at hand, as a link, icon, shortcut or whatever, here it is: LINK TO ENGAGED AND CHARITABLE PROJECTS CENTER

This is a forum for the creative development of charitable and socially engaged projects and practices seeking to aid and assist our fellow sentient beings in this world. Please join in and do your part.

Of course, we ask all our members to engage in our "Lend-A-Hand" good deeds each day:

We ask our members to do their best (unless circumstances really prevent) to come to our Forum only after they have dedicated a "Lend-A-Hand" act of charity, aid and good works, whether big or small, within the prior 24 hours (please refrain from posting until you do), and that posters affix "LAH" to their posts to show that they have. However, as with "SAT," this is not meant to brag about what you have done, but only to encourage others in our Sangha to join in the spirit of community action. Thus, DO NOT SAY what you did ... but rather, just do something good, and in your heart silently dedicate it to Treeleaf's LAH efforts. By placing LAH in your post, we will know that you did something big or small, but never know what. Only you will know.
    ,

    LEND A HAND LINK

We also ask you to anonymously report some of your good deeds, not to brag, but simply to inspire others with examples of what can be done:
    .
GOJO BODHISATTVA 'LAH' ANONYMOUS REPORT DROPBOX LINK

The password for your messages to this dropbox is 'dogen' - all lower case.

I will also introduce from time to time some group projects that, we hope, we can all join in as a Sangha community. We might raise funds for schools, clinics and other charities around the world, engage in local blanket drives for the homeless, neighborhood clean-ups, reaching out to befriend the lonely ... Please stay tuned here for upcoming announcements and Sangha projects that we will do together. We'll suggest certain actions that you can take, in large and small ways. The will be simple ideas that are eminently do-able by anyone.

Folks will be asked to contribute only as their health, other personal responsibilities, and financial conditions allow. However, we will all pull together as a team to help sentient beings, and bring some good into this world.

Also, please feel free to post here and suggest some project ideas that we can all do together as a community.

Our Bodhisattva Vow is to rescue the sentient beings, and this is part of that. This brings Zazen and the Precepts to life.

    Gassho, Seiko,

Thank you, Seiko, and for your forthcoming effort in reviving this part of the Zendo.

As a suggestion, I wonder if we might have an annual fundraising day for a particular charity in which members could either organise an event to raise money or give the odd $10 to Treeleaf's nominated cause? We could use Dogen's birthday or something like that for the date.

To piggyback off of Kokuu's suggestion with one of my own, perhaps we can think about a Treeleaf Giving Circle. I.e.; a running list of charities/smaller community-based initiatives or projects that we could choose to donate to—when not part of a larger Treeleaf initiative like Kokuu proposed.

          Everyone -
Kokuu suggests an annual fundraising day. This might be for a Treeleaf nominated cause, it might be nice for this to be a charity who work in many countries and many circumstances (e.g. Médecins Sans Frontières). Is this something you would like to do?

The suggested date of Dogen's birthday is 26th January. I wonder if a date in Summer might be easier on people's pockets, as December can often be an expensive month? I am keen to hear your thoughts on this please?

            Hi Koushi,
Can you expand on your idea a little please?
Are you thinking of national/international causes or local? It could turn out to be a big list!

Everyone - please join any conversations here at the "Engaged and Charitable Projects Center" and come with your good ideas.

            Thank you

Keizan's veneration day is the 29th of September (the date of his death) which might work better or, as you suggest, another day.

Yes, MSF was the kind of organisation I was thinking of that is multinational and non-political.

I just drop in that, if we recommend any charity or charities, they should be highly rated, widely respected organizations with high marks for financial propriety, efficiency and effectiveness.

I usually recommend turning to highly rated charities such as those with A+ ratings and such here at these rating services ...
                .

We also have a section of this Engaged Forum called "My Favorite Charities." That is where some Treeleaf members sometimes introduce their personal favorite charities and fundraising drives, but they are often local, or we do not know the charity so Treeleaf cannot "officially" endorse the project that we do not know.
