I'm happy this thread popped up today as "new"
I've been thinking about "being in the moment" for a while. I never liked when it was presented as almost a panacea for all the problems in the world. In the end, one can be mindful of their own actions while doing terrible and ugly things to other people. Mindfulness w/o morality doesn't make sense to me.

Thank you Jundo for starting this thread, and for everyone how contributed to it.
Reading all your comments made me realize that I was actually feeling guilty for failing to maintain this focused mind, for my mind drifting away while washing the dishes, even for multitasking when multitasking is what the moment actually requires...
A weight has been lifted from my heart, I feel lighter now.

Even the Buddha and Dogen sometimes "multi-tasked." Let's be realistic. Just be "at one with multi-tasking and life's chaos" when life is multi-tasking and chaos! Heck, even accept that sometimes we all feel guilty about some silly thing!

Only don't do it while you are seated in meditation.
It's kinda difficult not to be in the moment as, it seems to me, that any problem solving or planning or worrying I do are also in this moment. Where else would I be?
But don't listen too much to me, as a novice, my words should be taken with a pinch of salt please. In my house that's a pinch of "low sodium"!

Any words I write here are merely the thoughts of an apprentice priest, just my opinions, that's all.
As many have responded, but putting my own spin on it, is the profundity of those moments of balance where the absolute connection between actor/act and the larger world flow together. "I" pet the cat, but where is the boundary? Where does the "I" end? Where does the cat begin? Even in moderation those moments "pounce" (using the cat metaphor a bit more).

Hah! Our cat Yuriko is in my lap even as I read and type this, multitasking petting and reading.
But your reminder has caused me to engage in several minutes of single minded petting, in which Yuriko is just the whole universe!
