If you 'Like' a post in social media you are indicating to the originator that you acknowledge his/her contribution; and you may even "share' it. These actions have evolved very recently as short form conventions that can be useful. I try to use them as positive reinforcement for my neices, nephews and grand children. The one aspect missing from this is if I happen to miss a post or two, they could tend to think that I didn't like what they had done. So, when a wrong is committed is it right to be silent.
We all appreciate that words are mental constructs to convey a thought, form or concept; a means of communication berween beings. We are also aware that some words are more offensive to some than others. Nothing has power except that which you give it. While studying the precepts we consider the ways in which our actions of body, mouth and mind can offend or harm our shared environment and/or especially, our fellow beings. If we become aware that our actions can harm then we should cease and desist before the harm is done OR if it's out and can't be undone, we should apologize and atone. And, in either case, we should atone for even thinking on it. This, I am sure all will agree, is very basic to our practice.
I am quite sure that each and everyone of us has done some things we are not proud of. If you were born on April 9, 1937 this is the 27,961st time the earth has rotated since you've been on it. None of those days exist anymore. The only thing you have to show for them is unreliable traces lodged in your brain. What is real is the present moment; the past is a memory, the future is a dream that may not happen. You are what you think and it's never too late to change your mind. We should all atone for things we know we have done and make this the best day ever.
