But ... let's wait and see and hope ...

Seoul, South Korea (CNN)US Vice President Mike Pence on Monday warned North Korea not to test the resolve of the US "or the strength of our military forces," following a failed North Korean missile test.

... "We will defeat any attack and we will meet any use of conventional or nuclear weapons with an overwhelming and effective response," Pence said, adding that when it came to North Korea "all options are on the table."

The North Korean government is convinced it will be toppled without nuclear insurance. It is a nightmarish, repressive, regime, but all it wants to do is survive. They point to the Iraqi and Libyan regimes and say they would not have been invaded if they had nukes. They have a point (from their perspective).

A mutual non-aggression pact between the U.S. the DPRK, co-signed by China and other regional powers, might alleviate their paranoia. Can't see any other way. It is an atrocious totalitarian state, but the alternative to hammering out a deal is an insane war. I hope the Trump administration is being rational and just staking out a bargaining position.

As Buddhists, as clergy, and as caring people, I feel that we must always point to the higher ground. The time when there is no war AND there are no abused populations.

In the meantime, let us hope for the best.
