Jundo's talk made me wonder how time was measured during zazen, before clocks were invented. I read something about the use of incense sticks as timers but I am not sure if this is true or not ..?

Yes, this is true. So, sitting times varied, were only approximate. Likewise for the rest of the day, which depended on watching the sun shadows, how long candles burned and such, so varying by day and season, only approximate.

Dogen did not have an electric clock.
