                      Some of the musical instruments of Zen ...



                      ... including the Ho ...



                      The big drum and big bell are often struck in a particular manner to mark the hour. Some temples in China automated. (I think it it signaling 2pm the traditional way, 2 drum strikes followed by the one bell strike). Like church bells in Europe, the temple served as the town clock.



                      Another kind of music that is very popular in Japanese Buddhism, and I did not mention, is Baika, Plum Blossom Songs, a kind of Buddhist hymn singing. My Dharma Grandpa, Renpo Niwa Zenji, was a big supporter of Baika. Many Japanese Soto Zen temples have groups of parishioners who gather in a chorus to sing Baika.
