Thank you all for a wonderful zazenkai. Jundo, as always, you have the most timely and well thought out things to say and I will never not be in awe with you. Everyone else, you are precious to me and I can’t express the joy you bring to me.

Thank you, Jundo, and everyone. The readings and talk were wonderful, and I wonder about that hat, as nice as it is.

I have a lot to learn; take anything I say that sounds like teaching with a grain of salt.

Thank you Jundo, Sekishi, and all for another wonderful Zazenkai.

I only realized earlier today that it's been two months since we last did the Hokey Pokey due to Rohatsu. Personally, I think it would be a welcome addition to the official Rohatsu retreat schedule . . . just sayin'.

              Just to clarify ...

The earth is spinning about 1000 mph ...

The earth is moving through the solar system about 67,000 mph ...

And the whole solar system is moving through the milky way galaxy at about 490,000 miles per hour!

(Metric people ... I will leave you to the conversion)

And since this could possibly be construed as NSFW due to a line-graph-style-animated-human-reproduction sequence, here are just the lyrics if you'd prefer:

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned
A sun that is the source of all our power

The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour
Of the galaxy we call the 'milky way'

Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars
It's a hundred thousand light years side to side
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick
But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide

We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point
We go 'round every two hundred million years
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, the speed of light, you know
Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is

So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure
How amazingly unlikely is your birth
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth
                          Gassho,

Thank you all for sitting. What a great way to start the new year!

Lovely talk, Jundo, and I especially appreciated your comments on self-power (jiriki) and other-power (tariki). I remember an article by British Pure Land Buddhist David Brazier in Tricycle in which he argued that Zen was a school based on self-power and I commented that seemed to be a fundamental misunderstanding of the practice of Shikantaza in which the universe sits the self rather than the other way around.
