March 2nd-3rd, 2018 - OUR MONTHLY 4-hour ZAZENKAI!
I thought that we might spend a few months with the text, taking it a few pages at a time. Not all the advice is something one need agree with in modern times, maybe (based on his own later Teachings) some of it even Dogen did not take to heart. However, let us see what we can find.
I am going to read from page 21 through the first few lines of 24 today if there is time. It is a grabbag of topics, so let's see what we find.

Thank you everyone.
The new approach to Metta chant is wonderful.

I am a novice priest-in-training. Anything that I say must not be considered as teaching
and should be taken with a 'grain of salt'.
I am feeling to keep that "visualization" of the Metta Chant each month. Did it resonate with people?

Yes it did. I've made a point since of reciting it with that degree of concentration, trying to say the words rather than recite them and really putting feeling into the words as I say them. I think it would be good to do this with all of the chants now and again, it really helps to refocus on them.

Finally caught up with zazenkais and back on track. Found the metta section quite poignant, as I received a call from my brother yesterday letting me know my 91 year old mother, who in a Residential Care Home in North Yorkshire and has been in gradually declining health the last year was likely to pass away in the coming days or weeks. Another wave will slip back into the ocean. Difficult for the two of us as he cannot travel easily due health problem on is on the south coast and im here in France caring for my wife who had a servere agina attack a few weeks back, let alone our flood and canine problems which are slowly being resolved.
The metta verse helped me focus on my family and the staff at my mother's care home, who I've included in my daily metta over the last year. The visualization seemed to make it stronger if that makes any sense. It is so easy to get caught up in reciting words with no feeling or meaning. This has reminded me to be more thoughtful.
