Jundo's talk is up as a podcast episode now.
We continue this series of talks on a text by Dogen which is not so commonly the topic of Dharma Talks, but which contains a detailed record of Dogen's own lessons and interactions with his Teacher in China, Master Tiāntóng Rújìng (天童如淨; Japanese: Tendō Nyōjo). Dogen was then a young student who went to travel (by boat, across deadly seas, not airliner) seeking an answer to many questions. This is the record of Dogen's remembrances of much of the advice and guidance he received on those questions from his own Teacher. Further reading and discussion for this talk are available on the Treeleaf forum:January 5th-6th, 2018 - OUR MONTHLY 4-hour ZAZENKAI! (Welcoming the New Year & Jukai) »

Please take my words with a big grain of salt. I know nothing. Wisdom is only found in our whole-hearted practice together.

Dear friends, and yes you are dear to me!
I almost left, allowing my pain to come between a Usri and me. My temper is directly proportional to my pain. AND our dear Kousui, who I call brother for we have much in common, has noted that when my temper has stricken someone is has everything to do with my worst behavior which has everything to do with my bodily pain, and this is ferocious like the breath of a lion. Now is it really the breath of the lion, or his fangs, or his tongue, or his belly that determines how dangerous he is. I would agree with Kousui, it is my pain, so in this way I am like all the desire of the lion to be free of hunger! When I ventured to Jukai January 10, 2016, I did not know what the Precepts meant. And, still it is only now that I am making some connections. so not to as forgiveness, but to explain that my life is pain, and sometimes this pain is worse than at other times. My dear brothers and sisters at Treeleaf Zendo, not to ask for complicity, but to allow that sometimes as Kousui has told me "Tai Shi, what was your pain level when you got angry?" Because my dear brother, Kousui, has training I trust, he han ask me, "Tai Shi, what was your pain level when you became angry, ande you might note I use my friends Dharma name hedre because this is after Jukai, and I have looked on to my own Rakusu which I did not sew, it was entirely a gift, coming three weeks before our Jukai, and my robe is only on loan to me from Treeleaf, and I can say this, if I am parted in any way from my friends at Treeleaf, the Rakuse, robe, must return to Treeleaf, my hands do not allow the sewing, and even now I type with one finger. My Rakusu, oh what a gift! When I opened the packaged, Oh Racasu, my dear wife sewed my Rakusu cover from scraps in her sewing box, so I just suppose as I have taken on the Precepts, you all next week, will take on your Robe, your learning of the Precepts which will only now come forth, Thank you Shingen. Thank you Kousui. Thank you Jundo. Thank you ALL good luck as you go forth to the Precepts.
