New Zen Podcast from Soto Teacher Domyo Burk

    Dear All,

I have added to our "TREELEAF SUGGESTED BOOK & MEDIA LIST" ....

Hi, The following is a recommended book list for our Sangha. It covers a variety of works on Zen, life, “Just Sitting” Shikantaza Zazen, Master Dogen and Buddhism in general. Thank you to all who provided input, and the list is still open to new suggestions and additions. Please email or PM me (Jundo) with any

... a new weekly Podcast from Soto Priest Domyo Burk ...

Welcome to the Zen Studies Podcast! Access episodes about traditional teachings, practices, and history - recorded specifically for podcast listeners.

Domyo Sater Burk is a Soto Zen priest and writer. Raised Catholic, she began meditating and practicing Zen in 1996, at the age of 24. After earning an MS in wildlife science, she left behind a typical career path to devote herself full time to her first passion: spiritual practice. She became a Zen monk in 2001 at Dharma Rain Zen Center in Portland, Oregon, and spent seven years in residential training with her teacher, Rev. Gyokuko Carlson.

After her junior monastic training was finished, Domyo established her own Zen center, Bright Way Zen, in a suburb of Portland. In 2010, Domyo received transmission, or permission to teach independently, from Rev. Carlson. ... Throughout the years, Domyo's second passion has been finding ways to communicate the value and joy of meditation and spiritual practice to others.

    More here:
Bright Way Zen's spiritual director and teacher is Domyo Burk. Domyo attends all Bright Way Zen meetings and retreats, leads Dharma discussion, and gives most of our Sunday Dharma talks
    They should be a gold.

I am going to "bump" my recent post here. I love Domyo very much, and her instructions on Zazen are quite solid and good. But they also may not emphasize the following as it should be, so I want to underline this ...

WHAT's OFTEN MISSING in SHIKANTAZA EXPLANATIONS ....
Dear All. I am writing a longer chapter for a book that points up some aspects of sitting Shikantaza that seem to be often missing, misunderstood or understated in many explanations I've read and heard regarding "how to" Shikanataza. In my belief, neglecting these points robs Shikantaza of its power, like fire

Shikantaza Zazen must be sat, for the time it is sat, with the student profoundly trusting deep in her bones that sitting itself is a complete and sacred act, the one and only action that need be done in the whole universe in that instant of sitting. This truth should not be thought about or voiced in so many words, but must be silently and subtly felt deep down. The student must taste vibrantly that the mere act of sitting Zazen, in that moment, is whole and thoroughly complete, the total fruition of life’s goals, with nothing lacking and nothing to be added to the bare fact of sitting here and now. ...
                    Gassho, J

I've just finished listening to both her "how to" zazen talks and I picked up on some excellent tips and suggestions. No matter how long you've been doing regular zazen practice it almost always feels fresh to hear it described anew. At the very least it rekindles bodhicitta. We are all beginners!
