        Several answers:

We come go Zen because we don't know how to cut a cake without being unhappy. A knife and a cake are not the same. Form vs form. We pick up the knife and cut the cut and worry about the size of the cake, the size of the slice, the appropriate knife, if the person will like the cake, etc, etc. So we cut the cake.

Then we realize that the cake, knife, you, me and everything else is one. Form is emptiness and emptiness is form. Any answer that demonstrates understanding of this principle is good. Picking up the cake and throwing the cake in your face would be good since your face and the cake are one. Smacking you would be just as good or just sinking your teeth into the cake without cutting it would be just as good since its all one.

But then a knife is just a knife and a cake just a cake. Form is form. The appropriate function of a knife is to cut and the appropriate function of a cake is to be eaten. So the cake is cut and eaten.

        The ultimate answer is this:

Only do Bodisattva work. Only work for the benefit of others. Use the knife and cake for the benefit of others. Cut the cake and eat it to help them celebrate their joy and to have the strength to continue Bodhisttava work.

My Boddhisatva work is answering this question this morning is to explain the above.

        Time to get to work.

I suspect Jundo using skillful means gave you the answer you are prepared to hear right now:

The proper function of a knife.

In giving you this answer he performs Bodhisattva work.

cut it carefully, someone put a lot of effort in that cake and then eat only cake and not the knife, the dishwasher or your friends!

                    Hi Guys,

I usually avoid these Zenny games around here. Quite out of place, and misunderstood by many modern people.

Maybe we can ask Kakunen if his question is answered, or whether he had something else in mind.

                          Yes, with a knife.

However, as many times as you cut it, it is still a whole cake.
