I heard a Zen historian (i forget whom, maybe Carl Bielefeldt) say that everybody in Zen calls the other guy the cursed "gradual", and claims to be the "sudden" path. That is so right.
The truth is that, for both paths of Rinzai and Soto, there are many and varied "sudden" realizations just in this moment, which need to be gradually cultivated over time. There is no "sudden and one is done" path. Both are lifetime paths. And different people take to each with different talents.
