Rev. Kakunen, our old friend, asked me to translate this for him as he is really tired. You will understand why when you read it. He may be away soon for a long period of retreat in his training, and unable to write us, so he asked me to post it.

          -------------------------

          Hello everyone.

I am continuing training at Tenryuji Temple. Before this, a Jyomanji Temple, I was so busy with work that the head priest there instructed me to visit Tenryuji Temple.

Here at Tenryuji I have a monthly Sesshin and I sit every day and a lot of people come from abroad.

The head priest at Tenryuji, Kosen Sasakawa, is tough but kind. Because it is the lineage of Sawaki Roshi, it is in the circle of Antaiji Temple (Sawaki and Uchitama Roshi’s temple where I used to practice) and Nishijima Roshi.

I have had a big change since I came here. I came to accept events and even my father and mother have had good changes.

I threw all my house away the other day, moving away and just keeping a few possessions. Jundo helped me move. Separate from my family, money is almost zero, luggage is down to just a few boxes.

This is a true “Homeleaving” (as priest ordination is called) and this style is rare now. There was a reason that I had to throw it all away, because I was in such a state.

Next month I will go to Zuioji training monastery, which is the closest in its style to the ways of Sawaki Roshi. I cannot do Internet or leave the monastery for about a year. Then I might go to the Soto Head Monastery Eiheiji for more training.

I am indebted to everyone. Japan has the ways and traditions of Japan and there were times when it may strike a strange chord.

I am looking forward to speaking with you all again in the future.

          --------------------------------

From Jundo: Some shots and information about Zuioji ...

Zuioji is a celebrated landmark in the city of Niihama in Ehime Prefecture. Niihama prospered as an industrial city after the discovery of copper mines in the 17th century.

Zazen is balance even when the room is spinning. But sometimes, vertigo can make it impossible to sit or anything in life.

My mother had inner ear problems, and I know how bad that can get. I will sit for your recovery.
