    Zafu suggestions

I'm on the look out for a zafu, the taller the better. When I occasionally go to the zendo I sit on two zafu's. I seem to get this immense pain in my lower back and two zafu's seem to do the trick. So what kind of zafu would you suggest? I'm taking a look at amazon now, the good ones are obviously pricey, and if I'm gonna buy two that's even pricier.. Anyone know any other sites where they sell them for cheaper? Also the firmer the better. I used to sit on 4 sofa cushions but I can't anymore cos I'm doing damage to them.
Also would you suggest getting a Zabuton too? I have a yoga mat here, is that just as good?

Take a look at the Monastery Store online. They have some pretty tall ones. I don't recall them being cheap though, but it may be worth it for you.

You might try making a zafu to suit your needs; they're not that hard to make. Sofa cushions, pillows, etc. are far too soft and squishy; use buckwheat hulls or kapok, stuffed as tight as you can make it.
Yes, the bony bits of your knees and feet will appreciate a good zabuton.zafuSewingInstructions.jpgzafu2.jpgzabuton.jpg

        Hi Greg,

I am a tall guy for Mexican standards and local zafus are pretty small. I sit in a couple of folded blankets and I adjust them to my needs.

Owning a zafu is nice, but some blankets will do. What matters is practicing zazen.

          Hi Greg

I would also recommend sewing your own. You can then make whatever height works for you. I keep bits of old clothing to stuff with.

Good instructions for making your own zafu (meditation cushion) can be found here.  Personally I find that 12″ diameter top and bottom works well combined with a 6″ x 58″ band in …

          I've never owned a zabuton.

I have the Mountain Seat from the Monastery store and it's quite tall. I can switch back and forth from Burmese to seiza on it easily. The zabuton is indeed helpful and saves ankles and knees from banging on the floor.

I have lots of different heights and sizes of zafus, seiza benches and even have a meditation chair when I am really hurting. My favorite is an adjustable height seiza bench called kindseat. It's $200 but worth every penny.

The Ultimate Meditation Bench Seat - Helping you to stay relaxed and alert, it can be used in Kneeling or 'cross legged' / tailor positions or as sitting on as a stool when resting.

I'd like to echo Jakuden's experience. The Mountain Seat is the most comfortable Zafu I've ever sat on. It is quite tall (as am I), so I would imagine it isn't for everyone.

Before getting the Mountain Seat, I used a buckwheat hull Zafu (filled extra full) and kept a small blanket folded up under it (to increase the height by about 2 inches). I bought a few pounds of buckwheat hulls for stuffing Zafu's extra full here: http://www.dharmacrafts.com/100xZA/2...ose-pound.html

But that is just my experience. Your mileage may vary!

                Good luck in your search.
