Hello all
I read this quote today and it amused me and seemed to have some validity in a Zen context as well, albeit from an unlikely 'Zen Master'!
Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened.
-- Winston Churchill
I remember when I first had the experience of selflessness during meditation. It was scary and my mind was scrambling around trying to find something solid to hold onto. So, I can imagine how most people react when they see some version of 'the truth' such as mortality and dukkha. It takes practice to become used to some of these ideas and much easier to keep taking the blue pill1.
Zazen is our daily dose of reality and chance to see through the story we construct from moment to moment. I imagine that Mr Churchill lived through enough upheaval in his lifetime to have the veil pierced somewhat.
