    "The process is fearless."

I am a life-long Chicago Cubs fan. They have not won the World Series since 1908, and they have not even been in the World Series since 1945. They are known as the lovable losers because of this. Their history is so tortured that even their good teams in recent years collapse under the pressure on those rare occasions they make the playoffs. As a Cubs fan, even when they are good, I have learned to expect the worst. I have almost no faith in them, yet I love them dearly.

BUT they have a good team this year and just beat their arch rival St. Louis Cardinals in the division series last night. I had to miss the game due to work, but I watched the wonderful highlights this morning with tears in my eyes, partly because I get the feeling this year might be different. Many are contributing their success this year, and why it feels different from past years, to their manager, Joe Maddon. He is known as a bit of a "mad genius" because of his somewhat unorthodox approach to the game. One of the things he says to the team (and us fans, too, indirectly) is to just do the process and not get caught up in the outcome. A reporter asked him how such a young team, one of the youngest in the Major Leagues, could be so fearless when winning playoff games against more veteran and experienced teams, and his answer was "The process is fearless." I don't know if he is into Zen at all, but that sounded very Zen to me because it immediately brought to mind this line from the Heart sutra: "... thus Bodhisattvas live this Prajna Paramitra with no hindrance of mind, no hindrance therefore no fear."

Another quote from Joe Maddon is "Don't ever permit the pressure to exceed the pleasure," so I am just trying to enjoy this Cubs team and not get caught up in what good or bad could or will happen. I am just trying to do the process as best I can, and that's exactly how I approach my Buddhist practice. I just never thought a lesson in that would come in this form from my lovable loser Cubs, but good teachers are everywhere if we are open enough to find them.

Thank you for letting me share.

I mean this is absolutely awesome, but im not totally losing it yet lol

Growing up a cubs fan, i was crushed when they lost to the padres in the 80s; they were 3-0 in the nlcs and nope they were swept! Then in 2003, the same thing with the marlins!!! But joe is outstanding; he's really cool under pressure and he took my new surrogate team the tampa bay rays to the series in 2009, which is insane considering wevare a small market club in the same division with the yankees and red sox!

Joe Maddon is just awesome and we were sad to let him go but i was so happy when he went to the cubbies; his style reminds me of the movie "moneyball": a revolutionary approach to the game; i think hes got to be one of the pre-eminent managers in baseball right now. He gets involved with the community and is a super class act. Go cubbies! I hope they play and take out the dodgers!!!

Just watched the Jays and the Rangers... a very fluky play almost turned it. I couldn't imagine the pressure to perform..in an emotionally charged stadium, all eyes on every move. There has to be a clear and steady mind. It helps that it is an elegant game.

              Hi Al,

thanks for sharing this, I totally get it man.

My drug, I mean game, is basketball. Phil Jackson wrote a book about basketball with a Zen perspective called Sacred Hoops, a great read for the zenny sports fan:

Deep down, at that existential level, I think we are all Cub fans. I'd like to think that even the Buddha was a Cub fan

As a long suffering fan of the Cleveland Indians, my heart is with the Cubs this year, because their fans have suffered longer.

To be a Cubs fan is to suffer; they are synonymous. Why do we suffer? Because we are so attached to outcomes: winning, winning regularly, making the playoffs, making the playoffs regularly, winning in the playoffs, winning in the playoffs regularly, being in the World Series, etc. What's so revolutionary about Joe Maddon, and the Buddha, is to say the way out of that suffering is letting go of the outcomes and living the process. Who talks like that in baseball, or any sport? Other than Phil Jackson, who is a zennie and has won LOTS of championships through getting his players to focus on the process, no one! (Actually, I think the successful ones do, just not in the same way, but go with me here).

In many ways, the Cubs taught me about life, because a lot of life is about not getting what you want and then moving on anyway. Where that great lesson went wrong is how the moving on focused on the outcome of "next year is gonna be our year" sort of outcome thinking = suffering. The process has always been right in front of my face, but it took years of Buddhist practice and Joe Maddon to show me the way. Crazy, huh.

                        Thank you Alan.

The only thing I know about baseball is that they sell hot dogs at the stadium :P

But fear, that I know. It was only until I could let go and and after years of reading Hannya Shingyo that I more or less could see where fears came from. Grasping to an outcome led me to quite a lot of suffering.

Your words hit home for me.

                              Sorry Cubs.

But there is always next season.

Ever notice how the old 1908 Cubs logo also looks like an Enso?

That's also the last time they won the World Series. What's the lesson there? I have no idea.
