Does zazen have to be hard zazen?

I don't do hard zazen. I just sit morning and evening. I think Dogen said that zazen is the dharma gate to joy and ease. This just sitting mind is always available.

I think my practice is right when I don't feel right, but I still continue. Zazen does not have to be hard, but sometimes hard is right. Thank you all

        Hello Mr. K

How does one know when Practice is going in a good direction?

I am not sure. Maybe when I get upset, it does not last so long. In the morning things are new again.

Does Zazen have to be hard Zazen?

I don't think it has to be, but it is sometimes.

          Kominamidate san,

"How does one know when Practice is going in a good direction?"

For me, it is when I see an effect on my everyday life (that is, when I am NOT sitting).

"Does Zazen have to be hard Zazen?"

I sit with chronic injury and pain, so ALL zazen seems to be 'hard' zazen for me ! I don't think it needs to be 'hard', but it does need to be a discipline. It needs to be regular. And it needs to be 'long enough' (I think that you can sit 'too long' or 'not long enough'; it takes some time to find out the best duration. After your Sesshin, you probably know how long is too long and how long is not long enough for you!)

          Gassho,
          Anshu

            Hello Mr K,

I, and most people at Treeleaf, do not have experience of shyugyou. Your feelings about it are much more valuable than our opinions. Thank you very much for telling us about your feelings.

            Best wishes

              Thank you very much everybody!
Your words is like a our living world.Every word have possibility. All of the words will be useful someday.

I remember about last year of my life.I went lots of temple in Japan. And I meet many people.
But I arrive at Treeleaf. So my teacher in Japan said 「Amazing? How do you search this Zendo?」
He was at CANADA about 30 year, but he can not search real Zazen,he said.

At that time I can not understand what he said. But I went our Zazenkai everytime. But I do not feel that Zazen is good for me.

At same time I meet psychology of Victor Frankl style named Logo therapy.Such method said「We do not search meaning of life」「Life ask us and we must do my best for such like ask」My teacher of Logo therapy in Germany, she is also sit Zazen, she said「Very important thing is selfless」.

So I will try everyday Zazen at Treeleaf and I will try to search Sesshin at any other Zendo or by myself ,and I will try to do Dharma-talk at other place.

In Antaiji we have sit and 4 hour Zazen, and do 5day Sesshin at a month and one day Sesshin is at a week and before Sesshin have Dharma talk.I feel that important is everyday Zazen and my regular Sesshin and Dharma talk.

I try to search my Zazen way.And Thank for your support and Jundo's support,if I do not arrive here I can not meet you and Muho and Logo therapy.

And I realize that I've already been walking Zazen way from one year ago.Thank you very much.

              合掌 Gassho!

                こんにちは!私は、日本語を学んでいます。少しの時間を待ってから、多分私達は話します。

                Hi K-san

Your English is quite good. English is not my main language and sometimes is also difficult for me too. But you just write and practice. The more you write, the better you'll get. Just like full lotus.

About your questions, I will try to answer, but I could be totally wrong:

How does one know when Practice is going in a good direction?
You know when life becomes a much comfortable place to be. Also you are happy with things as they are, even if you have a lot of problems. You are at peace with the things you have and the things you know. You get angry or sad a lot less than before. Lastly, you start to understand compassion and generosity in a more deep level and this leads you to help other.

Does Zazen have to be hard Zazen"?
Long zazen sessions are a great way to learn, be calm and keep the ego far away from us.

But also short zazen sessions are great because of the same reasons.

I think the most important thing is to just sit zazen and practice. Sometimes we have the chance to do hard zazen. Sometimes we don't have the chance, so we do short zazen.

Zazen is zazen, and its sacred.

Thank you for being here with us.

                Gassho,

I do not answer at here.
Such kind of question in internet is very dangerous I think.
