    About Values and Star Wars

    Hi dear sangha,

These days I have been thinking about Emptiness, how we humans tend to assign value to stuff and how much we can cling to that in order to give us the sense of self.

But sometimes we take it a little too far.

When we sit zazen regularly we can become aware of this and know when the mind is grasping to the illusions we create.

But I could be wrong, of course.

    Gassho,

    Kyonin

          Hi Kyonin,

thank you very much for this talk. I will be looking more closely at the value I'm assigning to things.

Hello Kyonin and thank you for saying something i have been feeling for awhile. The new Avengers movie came out the other day and I didn't even know it until someone at work asked if I had seen it yet? I don't mind waiting for it to come out on video.

Thank you Kyonin! This talk really resonated with me.

For the past few years I have made a real effort to change my personal vocabulary to get rid of phrases that imply intrinsic values to things such as "that was a good meal" or "that movie was terrible" and instead try to talk about my reaction instead. "I really enjoyed that meal" or "I thought that movie relied on common tropes and reinforced gender stereotypes."

One way of speaking (and thus thinking) implies intrinsic value, while the other describes a personal and conditional experience. I sometimes think we could reduce suffering in the world tremendously by simply getting rid of the verb "to be" from all our languages. It is easy to be fooled by expressions like "Americans are ____" or "Mexicans are ____" or "Christians are ____" or "Buddhists are ____" or "____'s are good" or "____'s are bad."

Thank you again for the talk Kyonin.

                        Gassho,

P.S. For the record, despite going into that trailer with low expectations (I am not big fan of JJ Abrams), when Han and Chewie appeared on screen in the last few moments of the trailer, I completely lost it. ^_^
