This sounds marvellous - I am currently in negotiations with wife and children . I imagine I will be doing the recorded version - is it possible to save the recording to a datastick ?? I could then snuck away to a distant part of the house on a laptop.

      Kind regards

        Hi,

More than a data stick, I would suggest springing for a WiFi wireless connection for the house (broadcast station and receiver). If it is not already built into your laptop, you need a receiver card too for your laptop. Easy to install. Not terribly pricey, but pricey like any electronics.

          Thanks Jundo
I have a green light from the family - so will have a go at digging out the old laptop tomorrow and getting hold of the wireless stuff (spoke to the techy chaps at work today) - will keep you posted

              Hi Jundo

well I took your advice & I now have wireless in my house. Didn't take long to fix & is fairly reliable depending on which room you squirrel away in!! However, the laptop is old and noisy - so forgive me if I have to stoke it with coal every so often. I have got the run of the top of the house - so all I need now is a timetable & some gentle encouragement.

              Best wishes

Dirk you can actually save the FLV movie to your computer. Just let it play to the end, then go to internet options/view files/ and it should be in there. Copy it and paste to whatever you use ie. flash disk. You then just need a flv player to play it. I recommend Video Lan (a great program).

Should work. It works for Youtube FLV.

Also you should rename it and put .flvat the end of the name.

                  Hi Will,

Might you be more specific on the procedure you are describing? Skye and some of us have been looking for a way to do that, and you seem to have found it.

Getting the videos in FLV format from the sites is easy (eg Video Downloader plugin in Firefox), its converting them into a non-proprietary format that can be played everywhere that's tricky.

YouTube FLV is well supported by players such as VLC (VideoLAN Client), unfortunately some of the older talks specifically the Operator11 videos use some bizarro audio codec I'm currently trying to find a way to convert.

                      Hey Jundo.

If it is a FLV file you can go to internet options/settings/view files/

the flv file should be one of the larger files in there and shouls be the date that you watched it ie. if you watched it a few minutes ago then it should be today's date under last modified or last checked.

Then you just copy it to your desk top. When you've done that rename the file. So if the file has a name like 12829fff99990, the rename it to ie. sitting 1.flv (make sure you put the .flv on the end) .flv is flash file. The you can watch it with any flv player. There are a lot out there, but I recommend Video Lan.

You usually have to let it play to the end in order to see it in the settings/view files.

I'll try it with a ustream talk and see if it works.

                        Hey Jundo.

Most of the data that you see in your internet browser gets stored in the options/settings/view files/ (that's for interent explorer

The flv file should be one of the larger files in there and should be the date that you watched it ie. if you watched it a few minutes ago then it should be today's date under last modified or last checked.

There are a lot of free ones out there, but I recommend Video Lan.

You can even convert it to a different format. I've done it but I'll have to remember.

You usually have to let it play to the end in order to see it in the settings/view files. You can fast forward it though to right before the end, and then let it play to the end.

I'll try it with a ustream talk and see if it works.

That didn't work with ustream because they are streamed unlike youtube.

I found this tip in ustream help center:

How to Convert Recorded Video Files to Different File Types and How to Download Them
You can convert your Ustream Recorded video files to .wmv, .mov, or .mp4. To do so, go your "My Videos" page and click on "Video format conversions". After selecting your format, it will take a few minutes to convert the file. The format name will turn blue next to the "Download" option once the video is converted. You will then be able to download them by clicking on the format type in blue.

                            Hi, Will.
I think that only works if you are the one who uploaded the video. Jundo could save them in these formats, but I can't (or if so, I haven't figured it out yet). Thanks for the research on this . . . I'll dig around too and see if there is a way to save the vids. BTW, vids from google and youtube and the like can be saved using this site http://www.keepvid.com. I've used it to save things like Nishijima's zazen video and the Stuart Davis Show to my iPod and it works well.
