    Lotus Sutra Chapter 4 Commentary

    Hello,

and here it is, even more waffling inspired by the Lotus Sutra. This time, it's chapter four we are dealing with.

Btw. what a mighty flattering thumbnail pic at the beginning of the clip

      Hi Hans,
Looking forward to this. However, about 1min in it cuts out. Is the problem just on my end?

        Hello Myozan,

it seems to be working fine (and I am at a different location using a different computer now).

...OH..now it stopped working again. I think it's a youtube issue. Best to wait an hour or so, maybe they are changing some servers around (or the NSA is making a backup copy).

I've never read the Lotus Sutra. Any recommendations for a specific translation to pick up?

              Hello Kirk,

unless you are really comfortable with the general style of Sutras, I'd recommend reading the following before reading the actual Sutra (the same author also created one of the most popular translations):

BTW. I will upload the talk once more later tonight. Something just seems to get on youtube's nerves....

If Kirk does want to dive headlong into the Sutra, the full translation by the same fellow, Gene Reeves, seems very well done and is perhaps the most readable at about 500 pages ... A wild ride ...

I've read a lot of sutras, and have done so for a very long time (though I don't read them often). I am familiar with the style, especially those in the Wisdom Books collections.

I'll grab the full version; thanks. I know it's a wild ride, I've read many things Jundo has written about it over the years, but never got around to checking it out myself.

                    Kirk,

You may be interested in this lovely book, on the way Dogen danced and further wilded the already wild Lotus Sutra ...

A couple of short essays by the same author give a taste ...

                      Jundo,

I've seen this come up when browsing Amazon, but was put off by the price. I'll see if I can find a used copy here, after I've finished reading the Lotus Sutra itself.

Edit: Actually, I found it much cheaper here than the US price: about $25 for a paperback, which isn't listed on Amazon.com.

Edit 2: Here's the listing for the paperback on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Visions-Awaken.../dp/0195383370

                      Gassho,

                            Hello,

this is just a quick note to tell you patient "few" that Lotus Sutra Chapter 5 will be posted this Saturday. I always wait until I feel the urge to express a particular point in the Sutra, so sorry for the long waiting time in between the videos, but I don't want to have to fake enthusiasm

                            Gassho,
