    Ryōkan: hide and go seeking

    A nice little talk on the great fool himself by Eido Frances Carney who has just written a new book on Ryōkan:

    Episode Descripton: In this talk Roshi Eido shares a number of passages from her recently released book Kakurenbo: Or the Whereabouts of Zen Priest Ryokan. She opens with a delightful story of Ryokan…

    The book sounds well worth a read too.

    My hut lies in the middle of a dense forest;
    Every year the green ivy grows longer.
    No news of the affairs of men,
    Only the occasional song of a woodcutter.
    The sun shines and I mend my robe;
    When the moon comes out I read Buddhist poems.
    I have nothing to report my friends.
    If you want to find the meaning, stop chasing after
    so many things.
