I was watching this http://www.channel4.com/programmes/unreported-world/ about a doctor working in a Syrian town and was struck by his resilience, compassion , humour and humanity in the face of a deadly and surreal situation. I wondered how he was facing this day- to- day horror and it struck me that he had made a deep personal vow that had transcended his personal safety and desire to be with his own family in the UK. The compassion, determination and courage of this man is shown through his 'whole being' in the situation. It just made me feel humble to see a 'vow' at work.
